“The Wanderer”

{Wandering}

An old sailor repeatedly got lost at sea, so his friends gave him a compass and urged him to use it. The next time he went out in his boat, he followed their advice and took the compass with him. But as usual he became hopelessly confused and was unable to find land.

Finally, his friends rescued him.  Disgusted and impatient with him, they asked, "Why didn't you use that compass we gave you? You could have saved us a lot of trouble!" The sailor responded, "I didn't dare to! I wanted to go north, but as hard as I tried to make the needle aim in that direction, it just kept on pointing southeast."  The old sailor was so certain he knew which way was north that he stubbornly tired to force his own personal persuasion on his compass. Unable to do so, he tossed it aside as worthless and failed to benefit from the guidance it offered.

{Help}

The soldier's first article of faith is summed up nowhere more eloquently than in an 1865 letter from William Tecumseh Sherman to U.S. Grant: "I knew wherever I was that you thought of me, and if I got in a tight place you would come--if alive."

Title: O Give Thanks And Praise The LORD

Text: Psalms 107:1-43

Subject: Giving Thanks Unto The Lord And Praising Him

Theme: Why We Should Give Thanks Unto The Lord And Praise Him?

Intro. : I Believe That You Would Agree That We Are Living In An Unthankful And An Ungrateful Generation. But As Children Of God We Should Give Thanks Unto The Lord And We Should Praise Him.

Prop. : Every Child Of God Should Give Thanks Unto The Lord And Praise Him.

Key Word: Reasons

Tran. Stat.: Every Child Of God Should Give Thanks Unto The Lord And Praise Him Because Of The Reasons Set Forth In This Chapter.

I. Because There Is A Home For The Homeless Vs. 1-9

II. Because There Is Help For The Hostage Vs. 10-16

III. Because There Is Healing For The Hurting Vs. 17-22

IV. Because There Is Hope For The Haven Vs. 23-32

V. Because There Is Heartiness In The Habitation Vs. 33-36-42

Heartiness: Energy; Enthusiasm; Enjoyment; Excitement

Habitation: A Place Of Abode; A Settled Dwelling {The Will Of God}

--When we get away from God’s habitation that is the place where God wants us to dwell- In His will), He brings things into our lives that are difficult and trying. The purpose for this is to bring us to the place where we’ll want to be in his will again and that we might experience the heartiness that is there.

Lets Make Some Observations In Our Text This Morning.

The First We’ll Observe:

1. An Example Of Barrenness, Outside Of God’s Habitation (33,34)

--God knows how to bring barrenness into your life if you decide to step away from Him. Lets see how God Brings Bareness In Our Lives:

a. God Takes the Pleasure From Our Lives (33a) {The River}

--A river is looked at as a place of pleasure. People fish in it, play in it, and travel on it. God knows how to take the pleasure out of life when we leave the habitation.

b. God Takes the Purity From Our Lives (33b) {The Water-springs}

--There is no water as pure as spring water. People pay good money to have spring water in their homes. A life outside of God’s habitation (God’s Will) becomes a life without purity, a life that is dirty and unclean.

c. God Takes the Productivity From Our Lives (34a) {Fruitful Into Bareness}

--There is no fruitfulness, no productivity outside of God’s habitation (that is God’s Will). It is truly a barren life on the outside.

Ill. = Vs. 39 Again they are minished (diminish; weakened)… Vs. 40 He poureth contempt (shame; disgrace) upon the princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way. God Don’t Play Games!!!

App. = Is Your Life Barren? Has Your River Turned Into A Wilderness? Has Your Water-Springs Dried Up? Let Me Ask You This; Is Your Life Productive (Meaning Is It Fruitful)? Do You Realize That When You Get Out Of The Will Of God, That God Will Judge You For Your Wickedness (Which Is Sin)? Are You In The Will Of God???

2. An Expectation Of Blessing, Inside Of God’s Habitation Vs. 35-38

--God wants you to get hungry for the blessing of His habitation again.

a. We See The Desire That Motivated Them Vs.36a (hungry)

--God is not going to move in on you until you get a real hunger for Him to do so! He will let you stay barren until you get tired enough of it that you want His blessing back on your life!

b. We See The Deliverance That Met Them

--Notice that all three things return- pleasure (Vs. 35a), purity (Vs. 35b), and productivity (Vs. 36-38). God knows how to give back to you what you lost when you went away from Him!

c. We See The Dedication That Marked Them (36&37)

--Their hunger caused them to be willing to work for what God had in store for them. But let me warn you “Don’t come back to God and expect that everything is going to be easy because its not”. There are cities to prepare, fields to sow, and vineyards to plant. There’s Work, Work, lots of Work.

Ill. = The prodigal son (See: Luke 15:17-24)

App. = Did You Get What You Expected? You Can Expect A Blessing?

3. An Expression Of Belief, Because Of God’s Habitation

--Once we have returned and God has blessed us again, we will rejoice and we will praise him, the one who has been so patient and good to us. The God of second chances! We will express our belief in Him because of what we see. Some things we see:

a. We See The Faithfulness That Is Assured (41)

--One thing that we can count on is the faithfulness of God when we turn to Him! He knows how to set us “on high” once again.

b. We See The Freedom That Is Available (42a)

--There is no freedom to rejoice outside of the habitation of God. However, when we return, our hearts are free to rejoice again!

c. We See The Forgiveness That Is Abundant (42b)

--The Iniquity and the guilt from the time we spent away will no longer have a voice. The One and Only True God who forgiveness is abundant will stop iniquity’s mouth. He is forever faithful to free and to forgive!

Ill. = When I, Kenneth R. Norman came back to the Father, just like the prodigal.

App. = Are You A Believer? When Is The Last Time You Expressed Your Belief? Will You Decide To Express Your Faith By Coming To This Altar And Trust Jesus For Salvation, For Rededication Or Just To Say Thanks?

Closing = Read Verse 43) Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

Will You Give Thanks Unto The Lord And Praise Him? You Have Five Reasons Set Forth In This Chapter That We’ve Declared Unto You. The First Reasons Is:

Go Ahead, Give Thanks Unto The Lord And Praise Him!!!
