Hyperadrenocorticism (also known as Cushing's disease) is a condition in which excess levels of the hormone cortisol are produced. Cortisol is normally released from the adrenal gland into the bloodstream at times of stress. In dogs with hyperadrenocorticism, the level of cortisol produced is excessive and, if left untreated, becomes incapacitating. Characteristic signs are:Passing large quantities of urineFrequent urination and possible incontinenceExcessive drinkingRavenous appetiteLethargy or decreased activityExcessive pantingPot bellyThin skinHair loss or recurrent skin diseasesMuscle wastingYour dog may not necessarily display all of these signs. Although trilostane is not a cure for hyperadrenocorticism, the can control some of the clinical signs. If trilostane is discontinued or not given as directed, excess cortisol production can resume and the signs of hyperadrenocorticism can return.BEFORE USING TRILOSTANEDo not give Trilostane if your dog:Is known to be hypersensitive to itHas primary hepatic disease or renal insufficiencyIs pregnantTakes certain medications such as medications used to treat heart disease (some diuretics and ACE inhibitors) or others.Remember that this medication is NOT FOR HUMAN USE.Wash hands thoroughly after giving each dose. Do not empty capsule contents and do not attempt to divide the capsules. Do not handle the capsules if pregnant or if trying to conceive. The correct dose will be prepare in a capsule as required for your dog based on their weight. The usual dose is one capsule given around the same time each day with a meal. However, if clinical signs are not controlled for the full day, twice daily dosing may be needed and your practitioner will notify if that is the case.If you forget to use itIf it is almost time for the next dose to be given, skip the dose that was missed and give the next dose when you are meant to. Otherwise, give the dose as soon as you remember (with some food), and then go back to giving it as you would normally.Do not give a double dose to make up for the dose that was missed. If you use too much (overdose) Please contact your veterinary practitioner or pharmacist as soon as possible or call the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26).SIDE EFFECTS OF TRILOSTANEThe following may indicate your dog is having a problem with trilostane capsules or may have another medical problem:Depression, lethargy or decrease in activity.Change in bowel movements (such as diarrhea or loose stools).Vomiting.Stops eating or loses all interest in food.As trilostane controls the hyperadrenocorticism, there should be a decrease in food and water consumption to normal levels. There should also be resolution of excess urination. If, however, there is a dramatic decrease in appetite or the dog stops drinking water, it could be an indication of a side effect requiring treatment. It is important to stop therapy and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has a medical problem or side effect from trilostane capsule therapy.
