|Materials required |Book- Pink and Say ABC chart (see attached) Paper for writing paragraphs |

|Instructional plan | |

| |Preparation: Have enough copies of the attached worksheet for each person. Read the story ahead of time so you are prepared (it is a |

| |tear jerker) for the ending. Also, when reading be thinking of adjectives that describe each of the two characters. |

| |Instructions and activities |

| |Before Reading: |

| | |

| |After Reading: Spend a little time talking about the story and the children’s thoughts. It definitely requires some time to talk it |

| |out. Once the students have expressed what they need to, show them the ABC chart. Explain that they are going to use this to think of |

| |adjectives that describe the characters. You can do this as a class or have them do it on their own. If on their own you will want to |

| |demonstrate first. Choose a different color pen for each of the characters. Write the character’s name in the appropriate color at the|

| |top of the page. The adjectives that describe the characters will be written in the appropriate letter box in the appropriate color. |

| |Those characteristics that apply to both characters can either be written twice in each of the colors or in a third color. Once they |

| |have identified all that they can they then have a visual to progress to writing a paragraph that compares the two characters (using the|

| |adjectives that they wrote on the chart) and one the contrasts them. |

| | |

| | |

|Assessment | The completed paragraphs can be used to assess their ability to identify characteristics of the main characters of a story. |
