FROM THE PASTOR :

Life Without Borders - As a photographer, I think about framing a shot, what to include and what not to include, where the light is cleanest, the best angle, and then I press the shutter. To expand the frame, I could buy a wide angle lens or a fish eye lens, creating a panoramic view, but still the picture has limits. There are borders. The picture might include the swing, but leave out the gnarled tree wizened by too many years. To get everyone in the shot, I may have to step back, but then I cannot capture the skyline. Old print photographs all had a small white border around the image, and some companies will print digital pictures in this older style. But what if there were no borders? What if a camera could capture a 360 degree shot? Well, they do make these rotating cameras, which can take a circular image, but these too have limits. What if there was a comprehensive camera without limits?

Life is a bit like a photograph. Our lives have borders, limitations. We are bounded by birth and death, and everything in between becomes the picture of our lives. For many people, death means all that survives is a memory like a photograph stuck on the refrigerator. The person is gone, but we remember them. For others, borders mean that this life is all there is, so life then becomes a selfish, hedonistic pursuit where you better get the big house, big car or big diamond because this is the only chance you will get.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ changed everything and took away the borders, which frame our lives. The perspective became eternal, and even though there is much beyond this life that remains a mystery, we know that life continues, that we continue. The image of looking across the Jordan, which Moses looked across to see the Promised Land, has become a metaphor for the afterlife. We look beyond the border of the Jordan River, beyond the border of lived existence. Life without resurrection is a cropped picture that leaves the best part out, eternity.

“Now we see a reflection in a mirror; then we will see face-to-face. Now I know partially, but then I will know completely in the same way that I have been completely known. (1Co 13:12 CEB).” One day we will be able to see the complete picture, but for now, it is enough to know that our lives are bigger than our time on earth. We are bigger as well.

In the movie Gladiator, Maximus declares that what we do in this life echoes in eternity. His pagan outlook is remarkably similar to a Christian one. When you change the perspective, you change the picture. The resurrection changes our lives here and now. We have hope in the face of death. We look beyond misfortune. We live for more than the moment, a handful of days, or even the shortness of a lifetime. We find comfort in promised perfection when life falls short, and we are bold to perfect this life where we are able. We live in the light of eternity, and this is the best picture of all.
