(We have been practicing ALL capital and lowercase letters and what sound they make throughout the school year we are just working more on these four letters and how to write them this month.) December was a short month with working on letters so we will keep practicing the ones from December too. We will also be looking over words in the “AT” family. Words like, AT, CAT, RAT, BAT, MAT, SAT, etc. The students think it is pretty neat that they can read the words on the board and it helps a lot with rhyming!!! Please remember to keep working on them at home too!PRESCHOOL FOLDERS – Please remember to clean out your child’s preschool folder. It makes it easier for the students to fill them back up!! ZIPPING – We have been practicing coats at the end of the day. Please practice this at home too. It’s important for the students to learn this for Kindergarten when they will be going out for recess and are responsible to put all of their own outside clothing on.HANDWRITING WITHOUT TEARS & MAT MAN – With the Handwriting Without Tears Program we have four basic shapes that we can make each capital letter with, (Big Line, Little Line, Big Curve, and Little Curve.). For example, to make the letter D, we would use 1 Big Line and 1 Big Curve, for the letter R, we would use 1 Big Line, 1 Little Curve, and 1 Little Line. To teach the students to write letters we use this terminology to make the letters. For example, if I am teaching how to write letter D, I would say, “Start at the top, big line down, go back to the top and big curve to the bottom. We will be spending some time on Mat Man. This is also part of our Handwriting Without Tears program. There is a song that we sing and we build Mat Man using our wooden lines and curves (Big Line, Little Line, Big Curve, Little Curve). Along with a couple other items we make Mat Man (a person). Here is the song: Mat Man has one head, one head, one head, Mat Man has one head, so that he can think. Mat Man has two eyes, two eyes, two eyes, Mat Man has two eyes, so that he can see. Mat Man has one nose, one nose, one nose, Mat Man has one nose so that he can smell. Mat Man has one mouth, one mouth, one mouth, Mat Man has one mouth so that he can eat! Mat Man has two ears, two ears, two ears, Mat Man has two ears so that he can hear. Mat Man has one body, one body, one body, Mat Man has one body to hold what is inside, his heart, his tummy, his lungs. Mat Man has two arms, two arms, two arms, Mat Man has two arms so that he can reach. Mat Man has two hands, two hands, two hands, Mat Man has two hands so that he can clap. Mat Man has two legs, two legs, two legs, Mat Man has two legs so that he can stand. Mat Man has two feet, two feet, two feet, Mat Man has two feet so that he can walk. The students really enjoy this and it teaches them how to make a person and symmetry.PICK UP PROCEDURES – During these cold winter months we are trying our best to have your child ready a little before the scheduled pick up time so as we see you coming up the sidewalk we can send them out right away. I won’t have a chance to do many announcements at the end of the day so you may see some more e-mails coming through to keep everyone updated! Also, if you want to wait in your cars until you see me put an orange cone out (this will signal that we are ready ) you may do that. Then you don’t have to wait in the snow or cold! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for understanding!OUTSIDE DAYS – We will be planning a few outside days in the coming months but I will let you know ahead of time so you do not have to bring snow pants every day with your child. When we do have an outside day please remember to label all their outside gear so if something gets dropped on the playground we know who it goes to. INCLEMENT WEATHER – In case of inclement weather, the preschool may be forced to cancel classes. If Byron Center Public Schools is closed, then preschool is also cancelled. Due to changing weather patterns it is always best to listen to your radio or TV or call the Byron Center Public Schools office @ 878-6100As always thank you so much for everything you do, we really appreciate all the help!Mrs. Gallagher ................
