Library’s Home Page

There is a wealth of information on the library’s home page that is definitely worth exploring and becoming familiar with. For instance, you can access the library’s catalog, databases, research handouts, E-Journals search function and Internet research links. You can also access professor posted exams, course reserves and course websites from this home page. Other great resources you can access through the home page are various tutorials, including the CALI, LexisNexis and Westlaw tutorials.

Highlights of Each Library Level

The first level is the quietest floor in the library. Our Foreign, Comparative & International Law Librarian has an office on this floor and outside that office are a number of international related reference materials. The first level houses the current and bound journals and our collection for the call numbers A-KE and KG-Z.

The second level is the main entrance to the library and is the noisiest floor. The circulation desk, student-only and public use computers and microform readers are located here. The Access and Outreach Services Librarian and Interlibrary Loan Librarian have offices on this floor. The second level houses the faculty reserve materials, indexes, microforms, browsing collection and take a book/bring a book collection.

The third level is a moderately quiet floor. Our Reference Librarians have offices on this floor and the Reference Desk is located here. The third level houses our collection for the call numbers KF-KFZ, the reference materials and superseded items. In addition, there are a number of study rooms located on this level and an Adaptive Technology Room.

Computers, Printers, Photocopiers, Online Public Access Computers (OPACs) and More

On the first level located on one side of the Foreign Comparative & International Law Librarian’s office are two OPACs that allow access to the catalog, subscription databases and Internet. Located in the northeast corner is the printer room which houses one Westlaw printer, one LexisNexis printer, one photocopier and one UTS printer.

On the second level there are 12 PCs, six of which are available for public access, one Westlaw printer, one LexisNexis printer and two UTS printers.

On the third level there are six OPACs that allow access to the catalog, subscription databases and Internet. Located in the northeast corner is the printer room which houses one Westlaw printer, one LexisNexis printer, two copiers and two UTS printers. Located in the Adaptive Technology Room are a color UTS printer and a fax machine.

While the library hosts the computers, printers and copiers it is not ultimately responsible for maintaining these items. The library staff will do their best to provide limited trouble-shooting, but more involved problems will be referred to the Computer Help Desk at 303/871-6464, Main Campus UTS Help at 303/871-3711 or the Manager of Photographic Services at 303/871-6233.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Prospector

ILL and Prospector are different processes, but both are handled through the Interlibrary Loan Department. The most important thing to remember in regard to ILL and Prospector is to return the materials on time because there is a late charge of $1.00 per day per title on each item.

Prior to requesting materials through ILL or Prospector, please check both the Westminster Law Library and Penrose Library catalogs to confirm that the materials are not available through those libraries. If the material is located at Penrose Library, you can simply check the material out with your DU Pioneer Card at Penrose.

Prospector is a consortium of libraries located in Colorado and Wyoming. When material cannot be located at Westminster Law Library or Penrose Library, click the Search Prospector button from both library’s catalog and search for the material in Prospector. Both catalogs allow you to request an item located in one of the Prospector libraries and have that item shipped to the law library. Please note that Prospector materials can only be renewed one time and then must be returned.

If the material you need is not available through Prospector, then you should use the interlibrary loan request form located on the law library’s home page under Interlibrary Loan. When completing the interlibrary loan request form, please provide the ILL department with as much information as possible. If you do not do this, you will receive an e-mail from the department requesting additional information so that your request can be completed. Please note that not all ILL materials can be renewed and renewal rules vary according to the library that has loaned the material. If you need to renew your ILL material, please consult with the ILL department before the material’s due date so that the department can determine whether or not the material may be renewed. If the material can be renewed, the ILL department will send you an e-mail with the new due date. If the material cannot be renewed, the ILL department will send you an e-mail to this effect and you will need to return the material prior to its initial due date.

When a Prospector or ILL item arrives at Westminster Law Library, the ILL department will send you an e-mail indicating that your material is available for pick-up at the library’s circulation desk. If you have not picked up your material within two weeks, the law library will automatically return the material to the lending library.

Please note that some libraries charge a fee to lend books through interlibrary loan. Westminster Law Library will pay the first $10.00 of any such fee, but in the event that fee exceeds $10.00, you will be individually responsible for the additional costs.

Library Catalog and Databases

You can access the library catalog from the library’s home page or by using one of the computers in the library. You can search the library catalog in a number of ways, including by author, title, subject, library of congress call number and keyword. Please note that there are also links to other catalogs, including Penrose, Prospector, University of Colorado, Auraria and more.

You can access the library’s databases from the library’s home page or by using one of the computers in the library. The home page provides instructions on how to access the databases from your work or home computer. You can discover a wealth of information by using the databases provided. If you don’t know where to locate that pesky law journal article, use the E-Journals feature (accessible from the home page) to determine which databases provide access to a particular journal.

PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK ANY OF THE LIBRARIANS OR LIBRARY STAFF QUESTIONS. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU.

WELCOME TO LAW SCHOOL!
