August 2019Hello third grade parents and guardians! I am Amy Borders and I will be one of your child’s teachers. I will be teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies this school year. Just a little about me, I have two adult children and one tiny dog. I have been teaching seventeen years, thirteen of those in Greenville. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and have a master’s degree from Tiffin University in curriculum development. I am Tammy Smith. I will be providing intervention with Ms. Borders in Math, Social Studies, and Science. My husband Scott and I have two adult sons and a daughter who is a sophomore at Greenville High School. I am also the mom of a very large dog. This is my fifth year as an intervention specialist in Greenville City Schools. I have a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s in elementary education from Liberty University. We are both excited to work with you to help your children achieve their academic goals this year!DisciplineThis year we are beginning to implement a behavior management system called the PAX Good Behavior Game. This management system has been proven to help students acquire self-regulation leading to peaceful, productive, healthy, and happy lives. As we all learn to work within this system we also will continue to use the Rainbow of Respect which has an individual accountability component that communicates with home daily. All students begin their day on green. If students are caught doing something extra amazing, they can advance to purple or even orange. Orange is something they can achieve by doing something extraordinary, and if they do achieve orange during a day they will receive recognition from our building principal and a small reward. If students are having a difficult day and make bad choices, they can also move down on the rainbow. However, they can move up or down as the day goes on so they are always able to redeem themselves! Students who end up on red at the end of the day will lose recess the next day. Students who end up on red for a large number of days may also lose certain privileges such as field trips, parties, dances, special recesses or fun assemblies. We will send home notes letting you know when they are working to keep special privileges. You can keep track of your child’s rainbow progress. Your child will have a calendar that they are supposed to always keep in their orange take home folder. Each day your child will color in the color their clothespin landed on when school ended. Please ask to see this each day!All adults in the school are able to use the chart to move students up or down, so remind your child that they are to show respect to everyone. The ladies in the cafeteria, their bus drivers, the first grade teachers, their specials teachers and the school secretary are all examples of people who have contacted me to move student clips up (or sometimes down) when behaviors have been “caught.”Please let me know if you have any questions about this system. As we implement the PAX Good Behavior Game more fully, expect to hear words like pax, spleem, and tootles from your students. Assignment BooksYour child will be responsible for filling out their assignment book each day. It is important for students to know which assignments need to be completed each night. Each night your child should look over their assignment book with you and double check that homework has been completed. The planner will not have to be signed by parents/guardians unless teachers deem necessary.HomeworkHomework is an important extension of the learning that takes place in school. ?Homework provides practice and activities that reinforce classroom learning. ?Parents can help their children by arranging a quiet, comfortable place for the student to work and by seeing that assignments are completed. ?Homework is due at the beginning of class. ?Students will be afforded one late pass for language arts, mathematics, and science/social studies per quarter. ?Late work will be accepted the following day when using the pass. ?Credit will not be issued for late work beyond the one-day extension (when using the homework pass). Our team will send homework home on Mondays and will be due on Fridays each week.
