The SIU Library of Living Philosophers was founded in 1938 as a forum to advance original work in philosophy by critical analysis and discussion of the writings of the world's greatest living philosophers. A major objective of the LLP is the publication of volume(s) on the essays, critical responses, and autobiographical notes from major figures in philosophy which are submitted to the LLP in manuscript form. The LLP solicits nominations of major philosophical figures from the National Board of American Philosophers to be the subject of LLP volume(s) and, if the person agrees to participate, he or she prepares an intellectual autobiography, prepares a bibliography of published writings, and responds to critics selected by the LLP in engaging in dialogues on their works.

The record series consists of the original manuscripts received from the philosophers who are to be the subject of a LLP volume - specifically autobiographical date, bibliographies, criticisms from other philosophers, resolutions of misinterpretation, miscellaneous correspondence, and galley proofs from the publishing company. Major philosophers which have been the subject of LLP volumes include: John Dewey (1939); Bertrand Russell (1944); Albert Einstein (1949); and Jean-Paul Sartre (1981).
