The Original English Colonies Lesson Plan

For this project, your group will be responsible for teaching the class what you know about some of the early English colonies. So far, you have learned about the characteristics of the three colonial regions and well as some general information about the four New England colonies. For this project, we will focus our time and energy on the middle and southern colonies. Your group will be assigned one of the following colonies and aspect of colonial life:

1. New York and Farming life in the colonies

2. Pennsylvania and the Cities

3. Delaware and colonial rights

4. New Jersey and African Americans

5. Maryland and Religion

6. Virginia and colonial education

7. North/South Carolina and colonial families

8. Georgia and colonial leisure activities

For your colony, Mr. Forney will give you a worksheet that has specific questions about your colony, aspects of colonial life, and key terms that you should become familiar with, as well as the page numbers that you can find this information. This worksheet will be your guide towards your research, as well as your guide towards what is important to put on your handout and what should be used in your quiz game.

Each group is responsible for completing the following two things:

1. An eye catching handout that will have important material about your colony from the handout that Mr. Forney gives you

a. Side One

i. Picture of colony, key facts/info about colony, key terms

b. Side Two

i. Picture of an aspect of colonial life, key facts/info, key terms

c. Handout due to Mr. Forney at the beginning of Day 5

2. Create a game that you lead for the class to play (cannot exceed 20 minutes)

a. Game must be question/answer format, any way you want

Remember, the purpose of this project is to learn about your colony, create a handout, then lead the class in a game about your colony. Although it may seem impossible to teach a lesson as well as Mr. Forney, the sky is the limit as to how you want to present this material. All group members must take part in the preparation and the delivery of the presentation/game.

Timeline:

Day 1—Introduction/Research

Day 2—Research

Day 3 and 4—Workday for Handout

Day 5—Handout due to Mr. Forney (beginning of class), Game Preparation Day

Day 6—Game Preparation/Practice

Day 7, 8, 9—Games played in Class

Day 10—Quiz on terms list
