The Original English Colonies Project

For this project, your group will be responsible for teaching the class what you know about some of the early English colonies. So far, you have learned about some geography, key trade terms, economics, and some general characteristics of the colonies. For this project, we will focus our time and energy on the middle and southern colonies. Your group will be assigned one of the following colonies and aspect of colonial life:

1. New York and Farming life in the colonies

2. Pennsylvania/Delaware and the Cities

3. Massachusetts and colonial rights

4. New Jersey and African Americans

5. Maryland and Religion

6. Virginia and colonial education

7. North/South Carolina and colonial families

8. Georgia and colonial leisure activities

For your colony, Mr. Forney will give you a worksheet that has specific questions about your colony, aspects of colonial life, and key terms that you should become familiar with, as well as the page numbers that you can find this information. This worksheet will be your guide towards your research, as well as your guide towards what is important to put on your handout and what should be used in your quiz game.

Each group is responsible for completing the following two things:

1. HANDOUT--An eye catching handout that will have important material about your colony from the handout that Mr. Forney gives you

a. Side One (or page one) deals with your colony only

i. Picture of colony, key facts/info about colony, key terms about the colony

b. Side Two (or page two) deals with your assigned aspect of colonial life only

i. Picture of an aspect of colonial life, key facts/info about your aspect of colonial life, key terms about your aspect of colonial life

2. GAME--Create a game that you lead for the class to play (cannot exceed 20 minutes)

a. Game must be question/answer format that involves as much as the class as many times as possible

b. Game is to be done using some sort of technology. The game does not have to be entirely technological, but must have some aspect that uses any sort of technology, web sites, Web 2.0 apps, or anything else that you discuss with Mr. Forney

Timeline:

Day 1—Introduction/Research

Day 2—Research

Day 3 and 4—Workday for Handout

Day 5—Handout due to Mr. Forney (beginning of class), Game Preparation Day

Day 6—Game Preparation/Practice

Day 7, 8, 9, 10—Games played in Class

Day 11—Review game at start of class, Quiz on terms list
