(CLHIA) is pleased to learn of British Columbia's consultations informing the development of a White Paper and subsequent "Summit" on issues facing people with disabilities in British Columbia (B.C.). The CLHIA, established in 1894, is a voluntary association with member companies which account for 99 per cent of Canada's life and health insurance business. The life and health insurance industry is a significant economic and social contributor in B.C. It provides insurance protection to about 3.2 million residents of B.C. and makes $7.3 billion a year, or about $140.2 million a week, in benefit payments to B.C. residents. In addition, the industry has $68.2 billion invested in B.C.'s economy. Seventy-two life and health insurers are licensed to operate in the province and they employ approximately 14,460 persons. Life and health insurers are significant stakeholders in the context of accessibility issues, from the perspective as both employers and benefit providers. The life and health insurance industry has long been committed to providing quality, timely and accessible service to all consumers, including seniors and individuals with disabilities. As well, in recent years, the CLHIA has provided input on the accessibility standards being developed in Ontario and Manitoba and has actively contributed to discussions on the process for the development of those standards. We support B.C's efforts to reduce barriers and increase accessibility for people with disabilities. We look forward to reviewing the content of the White Paper upon release and to participating in the Summit which follows. In the meantime, if our association can contribute to your work from a business perspective or as a stakeholder in the health of Canadians, we are happy to participate in any way. Please feel free to contact either one of us directly. Sincerely, Ethan KohnLaurie DownCounselDirector, Disability(416) 359-2010(416) 359-2038 ................
