When asked, “What special skills or techniques do you use in working with the AIMS IDP students that produce positive outcomes for them?”

Staff Quotes:

• “Effective classroom management coupled with student centered, hands on learning, with an individualized approach featuring differentiated instruction. Also, helping them to integrate technology into their educational goals helps.” (Baboquivari Middle School, Indian Oasis Baboquivari Unified)

• “Individual attention to each student’s academic needs, daily schedule, and family situation. Teachers are required to contact each student/parent every week by phone and email. They also answer their discussion questions which is usually several a week.” (Primavera Online High School)

• “The ILC program is very individualized. The students only work on the NovaNET courses that they are in need of to graduate. However, the ILC Teacher does require the students to all participate in a Life and Work Management Skills course.” (Coconino Career Center Independent Learning Center)

• “An individualized self-paced learning model is utilized affording students the opportunity to gain credit as rapidly as they demonstrate proficiency. We feel that the individualized self paced learning model contributes to our student success.” (Buckeye Academy, Buckeye Union School District)

• “One-to-one and small group strategies have helped students become successful as individuals and as team members. Students are continually placed in situations that allow them to voice opinions and come to an agreed solution even when there is disagreement.” (Jobs for Arizona Graduates at Tolleson Union High School)

When asked, "Overall, what components of your program would you say contribute most to student success?"

Director Quotes:

• "Through the interventions and opportunities we offer here at the Independent Learning Center, we strive to individualize our program. With our “One size fits one” motto, we know that all students do not find success in one universal way, but in many different ways. We want our students to receive their diplomas or GEDs, but know that each student needs individual guidance and support. We create Individual Service Strategies for each of our youth clients based on not only our professional experience, but also on the student’s strengths, interests, and goals. We also take into consideration any areas in which the student has not exceeded in before and work with them to develop the skills to exceed their own expectations. We provide students the resources to graduate from high school while helping them to see the immediate connection between success in education and success in the workplace. We are not graduating students from the ILC, we are graduating strong, caring leaders and citizens who will go on to continue their education and/or give back to society by becoming outstanding contributors to the workforce." (Coconino Career Center Independent Learning Center)

When asked, “Please indicate which of the following instructional strategies are used in your program (including Individualized Learning Plans)”?

Seventy-seven percent of directors (23 out of 30) indicated that Individualized Learning Plans were used.

• “The Individual Learning Plan guides the steps to success for each student. The plan is developed with the student and then is reviewed throughout the student's education.” (Millennium high school, Agua Fria Union High School District)
