NOTE TO THE TEACHER: The Formal Assessment Task has been developed as a step by step guideline to learners.

The activities are to be done in class, during the first term. It is important that teachers mediate the various steps of the task with learners to ensure active, creative and critical

participation by all learners.

In the Formal Assessment Task you will be exposed to the following:

Notation of rhythms on a single line stave. Creating rhythm patterns of different note values. Musical phrases using voice or instruments exploring pitch,

dynamics and rhythmic patterns. Movement sequences exploring contrasts in time, direction and force.

1. You will revise the note values that you have been taught.

2. Complete the Musical Maths Worksheet below to show your understanding of these note values.

3. In pairs, create a rhythm pattern of two bars in 4/4 time and write them in your workbook.

4. Rehearse your rhythmic pattern and add body percussion to it.

5. Your teacher will now guide you to use your rhythmic pattern and create a four bar musical phrase.

6. Add voice and/or instruments to demonstrate understanding of pitch and dynamics.

7. Once you have rehearsed your musical phrase, create a movement sequence to demonstrate your understanding of contrasts in TIME, DIRECTION and FORCE.

8. Perform your movement sequence and musical phrase in pairs.
