LIFE SKILLS: CREATIVE ARTS FORMAL ASSESSMENT TASK: VISUAL ARTS GRADE 6

TERM 1

NOTE TO THE TEACHER: The Formal Assessment Task has been developed as a step by step guideline to learners.

The activities are to be done in class, during the first term. It is important that teachers mediate the various steps of the task with learners to ensure active, creative and critical

participation by all learners.

ACTIVITY 1: CREATE IN 2D, FIGURES WITH ANIMALS

ART MATERIAL: A4 and A3 paper, 2/3 B pencils, charcoal, coloured inks, oil pastels, dry pastels, tempera paint. Visual stimuli of animals like photographs, real objects, artworks of animals.

INSTRUCTIONS: You will be creating a drawing of your favourite animal from observation. In this activity you will draw and use colour media exploring a variety of techniques. You will use art elements like SHAPE, LINE, TONE and TEXTURE and design principles like CONTRAST, PROPORTION and BALANCE. We will also explore the use of MONOCHROMATIC COLOUR. This is achieved when you use only one colour and add white and black to create different shades of the same colour. In this way your picture contains a variety of a darker or lighter shades (or tints) of the same colour.

Discuss: Your teacher will give you a variety of photographs and pictures of animals like sea creatures, birds and wild animals. Look carefully at all the different images of the animals. Your teacher will help you to focus on the element of BALANCE.

Let us practise first: Choose an image from the photographs/pictures provided. Look carefully at your image by observing every little detail. First trace the lines of your chosen image in the air. On an A4 piece of paper using your 2/3 B pencil, begin to draw your image roughly. This is called quick line drawing to help you focus and give you practice in rough drawing your image (animal). Try not to take your eyes off your image as you should draw exactly what you see. There is no right or wrong!

Now let us start the final artwork: Before you start drawing again look carefully at your image. On an A3 piece of paper using your 2/3 B pencil:

observe the shapes and proportion of your chosen animal. remember that your drawing should fill the whole page. start by using lines and shapes but continue looking at your image. when satisfied with your drawing start preparing your monochromatic paint.

Let's add colour: Your teacher will explain and show you how to mix the paint and to get the correct consistency to work with. Choose the colour that you feel will suit your image the best.

Mix several tones of your media for example light, medium and dark by adding white or black to your main colour.

Again look carefully at the original image by observing the darker, lighter or medium shades visible.

By observing your image decide which shapes are different in tone, which part can be emphasised more and how will you show different textures in your painting.

Ensure that the consistency of you paint stays workable (not watery or too thick to apply)

Look again at your picture and add your final touches to ensure you are satisfied with the colour. Make sure your final product is balanced in terms of use of the full page and a variety of shades of colour. The painting should be your own unique work.

When the picture is finished, your teacher will ask you to write your name in the bottom corner.

Your teacher will mount your picture and display it on the wall. Your picture will be assessed by your teacher who will look at the following aspects of

it.

Considering inclusivity: Learners with visual impairment: you could do the same activity using touch to determine the shape and form of the animal. Textured material like crayons should be used when drawing.

For learners who experience cognitive barriers, break the activity down in smaller, more manageable steps. Ensure that all learners have an opportunity to complete all the steps at their own pace.

ACTIVITY 2: CREATE IN 3D, FIGURES WITH ANIMALS

ART MATERIAL: Earthenware clay / play dough / Paper M?ch?.

INSTRUCTIONS: You will be sculpting your chosen animal showing an expression / emotion!

In this artwork, you will use the elements of art called SHAPE / FORM, the design principles called CONTRAST and PROPORTION, as well as SPATIAL AWARENESS.

It is important to closely observe your animal, as well as pictures / photographs of other animals showing different types of expression / emotion. Pay attention to all the unique aspects of their figures.

Discuss: Look at all the different types of animal figures. Focus on the shapes and forms of their bodies. Pay attention to how the bodies change when expression / emotion are shown.

Let us practise first: Your teacher will help you with correct preparation of the medium (earthenware clay / play dough / Paper M?ch?). You will be working with your medium on a hard, flat surface. Your teacher will show you the different techniques that you can use to work with your medium. Start playing with the medium using just your hands/fingers. Create shapes / forms to see how the medium can be adapted and changed into different things.

Page 5

Practise making the shape of a leg, head, tail, etc. Continue practising with the other body features e.g. head, neck, and middle body/belly. Observe your animal carefully and pay attention to the different figures as you practise. There is no right or wrong!

Shape what you see! Take your time!

Now let us start the final artwork: You will now start to mould your animal again. Make sure that you use all of your medium, incorporating the different techniques your teacher demonstrated to you. Your sculpture must be able to stand on its own without support and be able to be observed from all sides (3-Dimensional). Be careful not to waste your medium and to use smaller pieces at a time if working with a larger amount is hard to handle. Sculpt your animal carefully paying attention to the different shapes / forms that you observe on the figure as they portray an expression / emotion. Your teacher will support and assist you as you progress with your sculpture by giving you hints and advice on how to improve the areas that you struggle with or techniques that you find difficult to master. Remember to concentrate on the details of the figure of your animal. Try to keep your sculpture as realistic as possible. Continuous observation is important! Pay special attention to the proportions of the features in relation to each other and to the whole sculpture. Stand back and observe your artwork. See if there are changes that need to be made or areas that you can improve on. Ask your teacher for input and advice. Once you have repeated this a few times and are certain that your artwork is complete, hand it in to your teacher who will store it appropriately.
