Chapter 10 – Photosynthesis – Homework

Chapter 10 – Photosynthesis – Homework

1. Write the basic equation for Photosynthesis (Ps) and identify which reactants/products are

correspondingly linked to the light reaction and the dark reaction.

2. Some students define Photosynthesis as the process by which plants use light energy as food. Discuss if this statement would likely be accepted by an AP Biology Exam Reader and justify your response.

3. Contrast and compare a Photosynthesis absorption spectra versus a Photosynthesis action spectra.

4. Discuss why is the narrow area of electromagnetic radiation between 380-750 nm is the

optimal choice to power photosynthesis.

5. Contrast and compare the function of the chlorophyll pigments versus the function of the

accessory pigments in Photosynthesis.

6. Discuss the adaptive value for trees up north to have their leaves change color in the fall.

7. Contrast and compare the location, function, requirements and products of the Light

Reaction and Dark Reaction.

8. During the light reaction the proton gradient created by chemiosmosis can be as great

as 2-3 pH units. Explain on which side of the membrane (stroma or lumen of the grana) the

pH would be the lowest after the light reaction has run for several hours.

9. A scientist requests a research grant to develop a plant that does not undergo

photorespiration. He claims that such a plant would help reduce world hunger. Discuss if

this might be a project worth funding with a research grant and justify your answer.

10. Describe what environmental conditions make C4 Photosynthesis and CAM Photosynthesis good adaptations.

11. In science fiction stories, plants that live on planets far from the sun are often described as

having black foliage, while those that live on planets close to the sun are described as having

shiny reflective foliage. If the plants on these planets do photosynthesis similar to terrestrial

plants, discuss why these colors would be good adaptive features.

12. Dr. Smith grows his African violets under artificial lights. Discuss what aspects of light

quality and light quantity must he consider in order to get optimum growth.
