INSTRUCTIONS

Market-system maps can be easily constructed in MS Word’s Drawing Canvas, using the Drawing Toolbar and AutoShapes

The A4 template above provides a starting framework.

Copy, paste and text edit the components (i.e. objects such as boxes, arrows) in the template to design your own market map.

Click on the grey border around an object to select it.

o Use different colours and ‘AutoShapes’ to draw attention to different elements in the system

o Use AutoShapes - Connectors on the Drawing Toolbar to show linkages between different actors and elements in the system

o Use Format AutoShape to modify the weight, fill colour and line style of arrows and linkages to show different kinds of relationship

o Use EMMA symbols ( ! – X - \ ) to highlight the impact of the emergency on critical elements.

Drawing canvases can be re-sized to fit report layouts – using the ‘Scale Drawing’ function on the Drawing Canvas toolbar.

Right-click on the canvas to find the ‘Show Drawing Canvas Toolbar’ option.
