February 2018
2018 is off and running!
The new year is underway, and we are off to a running start. We kicked off 2018 with a great speech contest on January 9th, with four worthy competitors from Lewisville High School. The winner that evening, Joseph Tauzin, went on to place first in the District competition in Haslet a week later. We know he will represent our district (and our Club) well at the state level in May.
Sunday, January 28th, our club hosted magician David Hira and his one-man show, “A Child’s Passport to Wonder”, at the MCL Grand Theater. Approximately 70 children and adults attended this fun-filled trip around the world.
Looking ahead, on February 17th we hold our Annual Spring Fox Creek Clean-Up. Several student volunteers from the high schools have already signed up. We hope to get some great neighborhood and community involvement as well. The event is listed on the Keep Lewisville Beautiful website calendar.
Don’t forget about our annual Night at the Races Fun(d)raiser on Saturday, March 3rd, at the MCL Grand Theater. This is our major fundraiser for the year, and it will require an “ALL HANDS” effort for the evening. We want to have a packed house, so please sell tickets.

Welcome to our newest member!
Welcome back, LION Lloyd Farria. After leaving our club in 2009 to attend to family obligations, Lloyd has rejoined the LIONS. We are glad to have him back!
Drug Awareness Speech Contest
At the meeting on Tuesday, January 9th, four members of Sally Squibb’s Speech and Debate Class at Lewisville High School participated in the Drug Awareness Speech competition: Aysha Jiron, Kaden Richardson, Joseph Tauzin, and Elian Wissar.

The topic this year was “Risk Factors and Why Teens Use Drugs and Alcohol.” Each contestant spoke between 5-7 minutes. All the participants performed well. The 3rd place winner was Kaden Richardson; Alsha Jiron placed 2nd; and 1st place went to Joseph Tauzin. It should be noted that all four contestants were sponsored by district LIONS clubs at the District Contest in Haslet the following Saturday.
Our representative, Joseph Tauzin, took 1st place again at District. He will travel down to Corpus Christi in late May to compete at the state (MD-2) level. Congratulations to Joseph. We wish him continued success!
The Creek needs cleaning
On Saturday, February 17th, from 9 a.m. to noon, we will conduct the Spring Clean-Up of Fox Creek. Students from Lewisville High School and LHS-Harmon have begun to sign up. If the weather does not cooperate, we will try again on February 24th.
Monthly vision screenings continue at Lewisville Library
Tell your friends, the LIONS conduct monthly Vision Screening at the Lewisville Library the last Sunday of the month from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Our next screening is February 25th.
Night at the Races
Our 24th Annual Night at the Races is on Saturday, March 3rd, at the MCL Grand Theater on Main Street in Lewisville. A buffet dinner, featuring Mexican Fajitas and Enchiladas, begins at 6:30 p.m. Races start at 7:30 p.m. Eight races are scheduled. A cash bar includes $4 wine and $3 beer. Silent auction will be available for bids. Door prizes will be given away between races, with a few surprises throughout the evening. We will also have Raffle Prizes at the end of the evening. You will bid for the prizes by exchanging your race winnings into raffle tickets to drop in each of the bowls from which the winning tickets will be drawn.
Tickets are $40 each or $300 for table of eight. Seating is limited to just over 100 attendees.
If you haven’t received your tickets to sell for the event, contact LION Tom Hayford at 469 831-5403.
