Eyeglass and Hearing Aid Collection Program

Overview

Collection boxes are placed at Minnesota optical stores, banks, schools, city halls, etc.

Statewide, used eyeglasses can be taken to any Vision World, LensCrafters, Sam's Club, and all Wal-Mart stores with a vision center.

Lions typically advertise the locations of collection points by displaying business cards at optical stores and by placing ads in the community newspaper.

Minnesota Lions send their eyeglasses to a recycling facility in Rosholt, Wisconsin. There, optometrist-trained Lions members and others wash, repair, determine the prescriptions of, and pack the eyeglasses. The glasses are put in bags, labeled with their prescriptions, and stored. An inventory is kept on a computer database. When countries request glasses, glasses are packed and shipped out.

Hearing aids can also be placed in collection boxes. Any hearing aids you collect should be forwarded to a Hearing Foundation trustee or to Grecia or Jennifer at the eye bank.

Board Member Duties

Board members are responsible for coordinating the collection of eyeglasses. If a location needs a collection box or if a collection box needs to be emptied, a board member should pick up or drop off the materials or assign another Lion to do so. Local club members will regularly deliver used glasses to eye bank board members.

Board members should keep the Used Eyeglass Collection committee chair updated on new or defunct collection sites in their districts.
