Target Skill – Identify Point of View

o Point of view in writing refers to who is telling the story to the reader (the story’s speaker)

o First person – the speaker is a character in the story and often uses I or me.

o All-knowing third person – the speaker can see into the minds of all the characters

o Third Person – sometimes they third-person narrators see into the mind of only one character or can’t see into the minds of any characters, but observe what they see from the outside

o Identify the point of view from different pieces in this theme or books you’ve read recently.

Comprehension Strategy – Determine Importance (review page 114)

o Not all information in a selection is of equal importance. To understand what you read, learn to determine importance. As you read, identify the main ideas and supporting details. Then separate the important information from the information that is interesting but not important.

o Practice determining the important information in this theme’s selections.

Comprehension Strategy – Review Ask Questions (review page 80)

o Asking questions keeps you thinking about your reading.

o Asking questions before you read will help you to make predictions about what you are going to read.

o Asking questions during and after your reading will help you to understand the material better.

o Practice asking questions using this theme’s selections.

Grammar – Singular and Plural Nouns

o Singular nouns name one person, place, thing, or idea.

o A plural nouns are usually formed by adding –s or –es to the singular form.

o Some plural nouns are irregular.

o Identify if the noun is singular or plural, and then use it in a sentence. The first one is done for you!

o Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns.

o They tell:

o How many?

o What kind?

o Which one?

o Find some sentences and identify the adjectives that answer the three questions above. Use this sentence to begin:

o Effective word choice:
