Your First Indoor Grow Setup for Growing Cannabis

Space for Growing

Instead of doing all the work to convert your basement into a greenhouse, you can s tart small with just a grow tent in your closet. There are several s izes to fit your n eeds. The ones we choose for our r eviews are all reflective on the inside t o make the most of the l ight source you use. They are also thick e nough to keep light out s o your plants have their needed rest time.

Starting from Scratch with Seeds

A crucial part of your setup for growing cannabis: You'll need to get a few s eeds. They cost around $10 or more p er s eed if you buy online from legal sellers (link takes you to our seed buying g uide). Once you have those beautiful little babies on hand, you'll need a place to germinate them. Be sure you've received seeds that have a tiger-stripe pattern. Black seeds are dead and worthless. You'll also f ind some more information on selecting seeds on page 23 of this guide.

Peat Pellets for Germination

Using peat pellets is an easy way to get seeds to germinate. Soak the pellets in water to let them expand. Then insert the seeds so they are about ?" deep inside the pellet. Keep the pellets moist, but don't water right on t op of them so they don't wash out of the pellet. It takes 3 to 7 days for the seeds to sprout.

Light to Grow and a Timer to Control the Light

Once your seeds have sprouted, leave them growing inside the pellet but make sure they have l ight. F rom then until they are about 3-1/2 weeks old, they will need 18 hours a d ay of light a nd 6 h ours of darkness. The easiest way to control this is to put your light on a timer. After t hey r each about 3- 3? weeks of age, you can give them 12 hours of light a d ay and 1 2 hours o f d arkness. That will start the flowering stage. You c an r ead all about energy-efficient LED grow lights in our article. LEDs consume less electricity a nd produce less heat. That saves you money on utility bills because you use less electricity f or light and air circulation. In turn, you're less likely to get spotted as a grower if you h appen to live where it's not legal to have cannabis plants. As f or k eeping track of time, we recommend a high-quality programmable timer. However, the cheap o nes that people use while they're o n vacation don't keep time accurately. You want one that can handle t he higher amount of c urrent you'll be drawing if you u se a powerful light.

For example, this popular E nover timer is programmable up to 7 days and c an handle up to 15A o f c urrent. The main downfall i s that it isn't UL or CSA-listed as having passed minimum
