Welcome to the largest collection of vegetable seed catalogs in the world. There are over 515 companies indexed. At least 120 of them still offer paper catalogs while over 120 of them offer at least one down-loadable PDF catalog. Most of them have online catalogs. This list was compiled for several reasons, but mostly I wanted to share with you a wide cross section of the many different types of seed growers and resellers that there are to chose from today. Each company has a direct link to their website along with a mention of what kind of catalogs they offer. If available, I have already downloaded each of the most recent PDF catalogs, which are available in separate folder. There are over 170 of them this year. Most of these companies sell seeds via delivery but I have listed a few wholesale and retail dealers who offer good information about their products and the industry. I also listed a few companies that sell native grasses and ground cover for those people interested in filling in those "hard to grow anything" bald spots. This list is not complete, but it is a good start.

There are 3 basic types of seed sellers: large commercial companies with many growers; independent small farmers; market seed resellers. Each company has found a niche in which to thrive. Rejoice in their success.

You will find links to all of the big brand name companies like Burpee and Johnny's Seeds. These large companies grow their own seeds and/or buy their seeds from many other contract farmers. They are then able to offer a large selection of seeds and plants while setting standards for quality and uniformity. This is where you will find some GMO crops and "Monsanto" style hybrids. Most companies seem fairly upfront about listing what kind of seeds they offer. Most small farmers offer either open-pollinated, organic, or biodynamic seeds and plants. Honestly, there are very few crops available to the home gardener that are GMO. When you are at a website click on the "about us" button and you will find out what kind of seeds they grow.

On the other end of the scale are the many small family farms that specialize in a limited number of varieties. I have listed these companies because the quality and variety of their seeds often far exceeds those of the large commercial seed companies. Plus it is great to see a family run business that is still in operation. I encourage you to support them whenever you can. Some of these farmers specialize in just one kind of crop such as garlic hot peppers, tomatoes, or ginger. I have also designated which farms are located in Tennessee.

The third type of seed companies are those that buy and sell generic seeds grown by many farmers, usually at a much lower cost than anywhere else. If you need to buy seeds on the cheap then these are the places to shop, but there is no real guarantee of quality, but it can be fun to see what kind of seeds and plants are available.

One of the main benefits of all these websites is the wealth of information that they offer you in learning how to become a better gardener. Many of the better built sites have plant databases, tutorials, and "how to" guides. Be brave and poke around each site that you go to and see what they can teach you. It amazes me on how much information is available out there today. You are bound to find something new each time you take a look.

Most of these companies are located in the USA but I have included a few from other countries when they have something interesting or different to offer. Peppers from Paraguay or cold hardy crops from Canada are interesting. I annotated the country of origin when not in the USA. Each web address is a hyper link, so just "control ? left click" on it and go. If pertinent, I have put in a word or two about each company to give you a general idea of their product focus. If the company sells lots of flowers along with vegetables then I list them as "general". Organic; open-pollinated; and biodynamic are other criteria.

Be aware that many of these companies offer paper catalogs that you can order on their website. If they do offer them then I have annotated it as such. They can sometimes be tricky to locate. You will often find the link to their catalog along the top of the menu bar or down the left hand side of the homepage. If they do not obviously tell you that they have a catalog then look down at the very bottom of the page. Sometimes it is hidden under the "contact us" link. They often have spring, summer, and fall versions of their catalogs so signup early and soon your mailbox will be full of garden tidings. The same is true for the PDF versions of their catalogs. Several companies offer updated summer and fall versions that you can download for free later on in the year. Be sure to rummage around at each website for valuable educational and instructional material. There are often nice links to other informational websites such as plant databases. Check back often for updates.
