An EPIC Assignment: Beowulf

[pic]

There are THREE parts to this assignment:

Part 1: Comic Strip

Create a comic strip of the portion of the Beowulf poem we reviewed and read in class. (USE BEOWULF SHORTCUTS)

✓ You must have six frames in your comic strip

✓ The frames must be in chronological order, following the sequence of the poem but must include:

o One frame as the setting

o One frame for the characters

o Three frames to show the plot

o One frame for the ending

✓ Each frame will include a caption, using actual lines, quoted exactly, from the BEOWULF SHORTCUTS within the frame where it belongs. Write the line number or numbers at the end of each quote.

✓ The text you choose must include the following literary devices

o Two example of a kenning (in GREEN)

o One example of an epithet (in RED)

o One example of an alliteration (in BLUE)

o One example of a caesura (ORANGE)

✓ Try to visually represent the characters to the best of you artistic ability. You may not use clip art images or those clipped from magazines.

Part 2: Word Cloud

• Create a word cloud that contains the words and phrases that show the characteristics of an epic poem.

• Go to app.html

• Select “Word/Layout Options” then make sure that all the options under the tab “Word” are set to no. Press “Accept” then ‘X’ out of the window.

• Select “Load”

• In the box that reads “Enter text”, enter at least 10 words or phrases that are characteristics of an epic. Select “Submit”, then “X” out of window.

• Select any theme, font, or shape you think best represents an epic in the Anglo-Saxon period.

• When you are done, select “Save/Share” then select the “Print” tab and “Print” it in COLOR.

Part 3: Beowulf’s Journey

Write a paragraph explaining the adventure of Beowulf, the hero of the poem. How does Beowulf demonstrate the process of the Hero’s journey we covered in class? (Use the completed notes I gave you last class)

✓ The paragraph must be typed, double-spaced and 12pt. Times New Roman

✓ It must cover the entire journey.

✓ Grammar and punctuation matter!

✓ You must hand in a rough copy
