Introduction:

People like you, who will graduate from high school in the 21st century, will on average have at least 10 different jobs and 3 different careers in their lifetimes! The purpose of this assignment is to get you started thinking about what you want to do once you get your high school diploma. In this webquest we are going to build a career portfolio. Let’s move on to find out more specifics about your career portfolio.

The Task:

You are going to create a career portfolio. Your portfolio will contain the results of a career interest survey, also known as a “career key”, a summary report on three different careers that your career key showed you were interested in, and a slide show presentation in either PowerPoint or Keynote on one of those three chosen careers.

The Process:

Step 1: Complete the career key. The career key takes about 10 minutes to take and asks you to answer some questions about what you like and what you are good at. It measures how similar you are to six basic types of people. The higher your score the more you are like that type. For example, if your highest score is on the artistic scale, that means you are most like the artistic personality type. You need to complete the career key and print the “career key test scores” page. Put the test scores sheet in your portfolio.

Step 2: Identify the personality type for which you received the highest score. Click on it, and you will see a list of all the careers for that personality type. Using the results of your “career key” you need to choose three careers from your highest category, and use the internet sources in the “Resources” section of this webquest to complete a career summary on each of the three careers you choose. Your summary for each career must include the following: education and training requirements, job requirements/training necessary, beginning salary estimates, benefits, and job outlook. Type up a one page summary for each of the three careers you choose and put the summaries in your portfolio.

Step 3: Choose one of the three careers you have researched and summarized and prepare a slide presentation in PowerPoint or Keynote for the rest of the class. Place a hard copy of your presentation in your portfolio. You will also make a presentation to the class using your slideshow.

Conclusion:

This webquest was designed to give you some guidance on how to research and choose a career. Hopefully it has given you some insight into possible career choices for yourself. If what you found while you were researching didn’t really sound like something you are interested in, don’t despair. Sometimes knowing what you don’t want is the first step in finding out what you do want. Many college freshmen change their minds about their majors several times over the course of their time spent in college. Few people will work for the same employer for their entire careers. For that reason, the skills you have learned here will be very important to you as you plan your first career. Good Luck!
