High-Frequency Words

High-frequency word instruction is provided in Whole Group and Small group Instruction at grades K-2.

Whole Group instruction uses a grade-level high-frequency scope and sequence.

o In grade K, 2 words per week are taught; at grade 1, 5 words per week, and at grade 2, 5 words per week ending in week 20 (of 32).

o High-frequency word activities ask students to recognize the words in their reading, spell the words, write the words, and then read the words to practice automaticity.

o A list of high-frequency words for each grade is in the Appendix of the Comprehensive Teacher’s Guide.

Small Group Strategic Reading uses a developmental high-frequency scope and sequence as correlated to reading level, as shown below:

Level A: 20 words

Level B: 20 new words; 40 words total

Level C: 20 new words; 60 words total

Levels D–E: 45 new words; 105 words total

Levels F–G: 70 new words; 175 words total

Levels H–I: 150 new words; 325 words total

o High-frequency word activities ask students to recognize the words in their reading, write the words, and keep track of other appearances of the words.

o In addition, high-frequency word activities as well as high-frequency word cards for each grade are provided in the appendix of the Small Group Teacher’s Guide.

Scope and Sequence

• What criteria were used to develop the high-frequency word scope?

The high-frequency word scope was taken from a combination of the following resources:

o Dolch Essential Word List

o Fountas and Pinnell H-F word list

o Elley, Croft, and Cowie (1977) research (A New Zealand Basic Word List)

Other Questions

• Is it okay that letters that are in high-frequency words are taught later in program? (An example is the letter e in grade K)

High-frequency words are not typically decoded. They are learned by sight through multiple exposures. Therefore, there is not a conflict between e being taught later and it’s earlier inclusion in high-frequency words.

• Why are there two lists of high-frequency words in whole group?

The reading high-frequency words and the spelling high frequency words are from two different lists. The spelling high frequency words have always been taught previously.
