A SURVEY OF THE ELEMENTS

A SURVEY OF THE ELEMENTS

SAFETY: Please do not uncork any bottles and do not pick up the bottle with the sodium in it.

1. All the elements in the periodic table can be placed in three major groups; the metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Do the following:

a. Color all the elements that you observed in lab one specific color.

b. Now, color all the remaining metals in a different color.

c. Color the nonmetals in another color.

d. Finally, color the metalloids each a still different color. You should have a total of four colors on your periodic table. Be sure to make a color key.

2. Put together a table, either ordering the elements alphabetically or by increasing atomic number. In the table, write the following information:

a. Identify the location of each element that you observed in the lab, in terms of period and group.

b. Identify the family name.

c. State whether the elements is a metal, nonmetal, or metalloid.

d. List three physical properties for each element in the lab.

e. Write the electron configuration for each element. You can use the shorthand if you can do it correctly.

Finally, answer the following two questions:

3. Using elements observed in the lab and in the SAME group, compare two elements with the same physical properties. What similarities do they have?

4. Using elements observed in the lab and in the SAME group, compare two elements with different physical properties. What difference do they have?

Instructions:

You will write up this lab by making a table of the information and answering the questions given this page on your own paper. Attach the colored periodic table to your lab when you turn it in.

No title page is necessary.
