Purpose

There are countless types of farm machinery and various tools that a producer may use to establish, care for, and harvest field crops. The main operations that must be performed for field crops are tillage, planting, application of chemicals, harvesting, and hauling of plant material. Farm equipment requirements will vary depending upon the type of crop, region where crops are grown, and the type of soil crops are grown in.

A farm machinery list would be extremely long and irrelevant to memorize unless you are actively involved with a production operation. However, identification of common pieces of equipment and tools are part of the National FFA Agronomy Career Development Event. These items are valuable to have exposure to as you think about the process of how the country’s food supply is grown and harvested.

Materials

Per student:

Computer with Internet and PowerPoint® capabilities

Activity 10.1.1 Digital Flashcard Template

Pencil

Agriscience Notebook

Procedure

You will develop digital flashcards for three pieces of equipment listed on the National FFA Agronomy CDE Machinery Identification list. Once the class completes all of the items on the list, you will share your flashcards with the rest of the class. After you have a full set of flashcards, you will complete an exercise classifying these items according to their purpose.

Part 1 – Research the Equipment

1. Your teacher will assign you three to five items from the equipment listed in Table 1.

2. You will search the Internet for a clear picture and information about each piece of equipment.

3. Using Activity 10.1.1 Digital Flashcard Template, make a digital flashcard for each assigned piece of equipment.

4. Submit your PowerPoint® to your teacher.

5. Distribute your PowerPoint® to the rest of the class according to your teacher’s directions.

Part 2 – Categorizing Equipment

Using your full set of flashcards, list each item according to its purpose under the appropriate category in Table 2. Use the following categories to sort the equipment into:

• Application: Any piece of equipment used for applying chemicals, fertilizers or other substances to fields.

• Hand tools: Non-mechanized tools used to get work done.

• Harvesting: Equipment used to cut, reap, or gather mature crops.

• Irrigation: Application of water to fields.

• Measurement: Any tool used to collect data.

• Planting: Equipment used to plant seeds in the soil.

• Tillage: Equipment used to invert soil, break up soil particles, or prepare seedbeds.

• Transportation: To move or haul crops from field to storage or market.

• Other Supporting Equipment: Items used to assist in crop operations, such as personal protection equipment or mechanical parts.

Conclusion

1. What is the purpose of tillage equipment?

2. List the types of materials that are applied to crops requiring application equipment.

3. List three machines that are considered specialty-harvesting equipment.

4. Why is transportation equipment needed for crop production?[pic][pic]
