|JOB SUMMARY |
| |
|The Program Manager of Physician Extender Services oversees and coordinates the day-to-day function and operations of allied health professionals operating in the |
|role of a physician extender within the UW Health Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. The incumbent also oversees the evolution and growth of the physician|
|extender program. For the purposes of this position, physician extenders are defined as allied health providers that support physicians, physician assistants, and |
|nurse practitioners in clinic and do not include oversight and/or coordination of advance practice providers (i.e. physician assistants and nurse practitioners). |
| |
|Under the supervision of the Director of Orthopedics, the Program Manager is involved in coordinating the utilization of physician extender staff, coordination of |
|daily schedules across multiple clinics in orthopedics, coordination of priority appointment scheduling, and overall support of independent physician and advanced |
|practice providers in the clinic. The incumbent also identifies and develops necessary ongoing clinical and operational initiatives for the physician extender staff.|
|A particular emphasis is placed upon maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Health Link EMR and overall clinic operations (i.e. clinic flow, patient |
|throughput, customer service, etc.) while ensuring on-going regulatory compliance. The Program Manager also works actively in project management by coordinating and |
|participating on key initiatives and priorities. The Program Manager also performs all general supervisory duties (hiring, termination, and performance appraisals) |
|for physician extenders and also oversees students from the UW-Madison Athletic Training Program. |
| |
|The Program Manager has responsibility for the Athletic Training Residency Program although this program has its own Director with the title of Coordinator of the |
|Athletic Training Residency Program (which reports to the Program Manager) for day to day intern supervision; curriculum coordination; and accreditation. The |
|Coordinator of the Athletic Training Residency Program reports to the Program Manager of Physician Extender Services. |
| |
|The Program Manager encounters work of a moderate level of difficulty that requires the incumbent to exercise independent judgment and decision-making. In addition, |
|the incumbent is privy to information that may be highly confidential and sensitive in nature and is expected to maintain professionalism, integrity and honesty in |
|maintaining confidentiality at all times. |
| |
|A wide variety of internal and external contact relationships are involved in performance of the duties of this position. Internal contacts include, but are not |
|limited to, clinic managers and rehabilitation managers across Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, other members of the athletic training and physical therapy staff |
|(clinic, outreach, rehabilitation, orthotics, etc.), physicians, nursing personnel, sports performance staff, fitness center staff, exercise physiology staff, |
|preventive cardiology staff, radiology staff, clerical staff, Marketing and Public Affairs staff; Information Services staff; Health Information Management staff, |
|Quality, Safety, and Innovation Staff; and E-Health Staff. External contacts include physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists from other institutions,|
|as well as patient and/or athlete family members, coaches, athletic directors, equipment/medical supply vendors. |
| |
|Organizational skill is essential to successful performance. The position requires the ability to independently evaluate, plan, and modify operational processes as |
|indicated. A consultative role to other UW Health Sports Medicine Center staff is necessary. |
| |
|The Program Manager is a member of the sports medicine manager workgroup, clinical operations workgroup across Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, and sports medicine |
|clinic operations workgroup. |
| |
|The incumbent has access to and knowledge of the confidential medical history of patients treated. Access to this information is crucial in the evaluation and |
|treatment of patients and athletes. |
|MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES |
|Coordinator of Physician Extender Services Across Orthopedics and Rehabilitation |
| |
|A. Oversees the development and evolution of the athletic trainer, physical therapist, and other allied health providers functioning in the role of a sports |
|medicine and/or orthopedic physician extender across UWHC. |
| |
|B. Coordinates the daily scheduling of physician extender staff members in clinics across Orthopedics, including Sports Medicine Clinic at Research Park, |
|Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Clinic at East Clinic, Orthopedics Clinic at the CSC, and Pediatric Orthopedics at AFCH. |
| |
|C. Ensures that the services performed by physician extenders optimize clinic effectiveness and efficiency while meeting standards for patient and family centered |
|care. |
| |
|D. Assists in the implementation of new clinic services/initiatives as well as revised workflows in conjunction with physician, administrative, and management |
|staff. |
| |
|E. Monitors and educates physician extender services to ensure that accreditation standards are adhered to by physician extender staff. |
| |
|Serves as a primary liaison to physicians regarding operational impact of clinic work in the areas of HealthLink/EMR optimization, referrals/consults/orders to |
|radiology, rehabilitation, and other services |
| |
|Provides “Physician Build” services to physicians and other providers as a component of HealthLink/EMR optimization. |
| |
|Conducts all employment searches for physician extenders working in a clinic setting in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. Performs all annual |
|performance appraisals and administers any employment related disciplinary procedures for performance-related issues for anyone working as a physician extender. |
| |
|Performs specific goal setting and long range planning for individuals functioning as a physician extender. |
| |
|Works closely with the Manager of the UW Health Spine and Sports Medicine Clinic and the UW Health Orthopedics Clinic to address issues specific to operational |
|efficiency and customer service as well as to develop and oversee the budgets for these areas. |
| |
|Functions in the role of a Health Link Super-user to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the UW Health Health Link EMR. |
| |
|Works five half days weekly as a physician extender. Comprehensive physician extender services will be delivered and provided in this role. |
| |
|M. Directs new employee clinical orientation, peer mentorship program, and the development or modification of policies and procedures within the Department of |
|Orthopedics and Rehabilitation specific to physician extenders. |
| |
|N. Coordinates and assists with the development of patient education materials utilized in areas of responsibility. |
| |
|O. Coordinates and assists patients, families, and referring providers with priority appointments across areas of responsibility. Works closely with the leadership |
|and staff from several areas, including: Sports Medicine Clinic, Spine Clinic, Orthopedics Clinics, Radiology, Orthotics, Sports Rehabilitation, and other sports |
|medicine/orthopedics programs and ancillary services as needed. |
| |
|Clinical Work as a Physician Extender |
| |
|A. The performance of an appropriate medical history on each patient seen that must include but is not limited to: |

| |
|B. The performance of an appropriate physical examination on each patient seen. This includes but is not limited to: |
|Range of motion testing |
|Strength and/or Manual Muscle testing |

|Palpation |
|Functional testing |
|Ligamentous testing |
|Special tests as needed |
| |
|C. The ordering of diagnostic studies or other referrals under the direction of the attending physician to include but is not limited to: |
|Radiographs |
|MRIs |
|EMG Studies |
|CT Scans |
|Ultrasounds |
|Rehabilitation referrals |
|Physician referrals |
| |
|D. The performance of educational responsibilities in specific to the needs of each individual patient. This includes but is not limited to: |
|Exercise instruction. |
|Answering patient questions in regards to the treatment plan, surgery, rehabilitation and future care. |
| |
|E. Providing initial rehabilitation exercises and the instruction, demonstration, and feedback on patient performance of the exercises as directed by the attending|
|physician. |
| |
|F. Fitting the patient with splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other various equipment as directed by the attending physician. The incumbent will also educate |
|the patient on the appropriate use of the equipment provided to the patient. |
| |
|G. Removal of sutures and providing dressing changes to post-surgical patients as directed by the attending physician. |
| |
|H. Aiding the physician in preparing patients for injections that will be performed by the attending physician. Preparations include cleaning and disinfecting the |
|area to be injected and preparing materials to be utilized both prior to and after the injection. |
| |
|I. Dictation and documentation of each patient visit following guidelines following all outlined guidelines in the dictation template. To include: |
