LP2 Personal Qualities and Skills

Exploring the relationship between personal qualities and skills

Small group, class size Suitable for KS3, KS4, Post 16, NEET

Aims:

? To understand the relationship between personal qualities and skills ? To understand how personal qualities and skills relate to real jobs ? To work together with others

Setting:

? Education or any information, advice and guidance setting with internet

access

ACEG Framework:

Elements for careers and work-related education:

? Self-development through careers and work-related education Self-awareness

? Finding out about careers and the world of work Preparing for employability Showing initiative and enterprise

Prior learning:

Ideally this exercise should be used as a follow up to previous learning about self-development in which they have been asked to reflect on their own personal qualities and skills. See extension exercise.

Preparation and resources:

? This lesson plan has been written to work with the Original Talking Jobs

Module of 40 case studies and the original 32 questions. If you are using

another module you will need to adapt the lesson plan accordingly.

? Classroom or ICT suite with internet access ? `Personal quality or skill?' - one each ? `Qualities and skills checklist' - one each ? `The Original Module Job List' sheet - one each ? `The Original Module Questions' sheet - one each

Suggested process:

? As a starter activity, discuss the difference between `personal qualities' and `skills'. Explore the idea that qualities

usually describe a person e.g. cautious, happy, methodical, and that skills can be learned ? reading a map, cooking a meal, using a camera. It is important to understand that there is no absolute list; some personal qualities are inherent, but some can be learned; social qualities can often relate to confidence issues which can be developed.

? If the group has not previously identified their own qualities and skills then allow 5-10 minutes for them to get into

pairs to do so, and feedback to each other.

? Individually they should now complete the `Personal quality or skill?' sheet, marking each line with a tick or

a cross. This task can cause much debate as there are many aspects that one would describe as a personal quality ? confidence for example, which can also be viewed as a skill ? developed through confidence building courses, workshops etc.

? Provide the group with the `The Original Module Job List' and ask each person to choose one job from the list.

? Give them the sheet marked `Talking Jobs qualities and skills checklist' and ask them to list at the top of the

page the job title they have chosen. Complete the first column of the checklist, entitled `What I think', with their views about the qualities and skills needed for their chosen jobs.

? When they have finished this task, give each person a copy of the `The Original Module Questions' and see if

they can identify which number/s might help them with possible answers.

? They should now login to and see if there are any clues in the video clips that will help with

completing the second column entitled `Talking Jobs (me)'.

It's important to note that with many of the jobs the answers will not be obvious. Depending on the nature and ability level of the group, it may be beneficial to get people to work in 3-4's to help with `teasing out the answers'. Mention that job information usually lists personal skills and qualities. Your own careers information area will have links to sites, or books that will help with this.

? Whole group feedback: Did they agree with the qualities and skills identified with the job? Did anything surprise them about the people in the videoclips?

? What about Employability Skills: Team working ICT Communication and literacy Self management Problem solving Business and customer awareness Numeracy (numbers)

Where do they fit in? Most employers now expect every employee, regardless of qualifications, to possess these skills. They are seen as `transferable' skills. Regardless of the occupation or employer these are day-to-day skills and qualities all employees are expected to have or be willing to gain.

It is important to introduce the concept of lifelong learning at this point. You may also direct students to questions exploring personal goals.

Did they find it easy or difficult to apply what they understood about qualities and skills to real jobs?

Could they find all the information they needed from the Talking Jobs video clips?

Evaluation:

Were all the tasks achievable? Was it necessary to give a lot of prompts or help? What difficulties were encountered with the task?
