Literacy Narrative Roadmap - Socorro Independent School ...

Road Map to the Literacy Narrative

1. Select a text with which you have a personal relationship (using the definition of "text" on p. 94 of the Norton Field Guide). Make sure you know how to cite this source using proper MLA format.

2. Analyze the text for underlying themes and key ideas. This essay will use the first person, but should still reflect critical thinking about the selected text and its importance to you as the author.

3. Develop a thesis that answers one of these guiding questions:

How does my experience with this text affect my views on reading?

How does my experience with this text affect my views on writing?

How does my experience with this text affect how I use language to communicate with others?

How does my experience with this text affect my understanding of narrative?

How does my experience with this text shape my identity as a student (and the development of my literacy skills)?

4. Plan a structure to present the experience and explore your thesis thoroughly enough to comply with the length guidelines (750-1000 words).

5. Compose, revise, and edit your draft. Include a Works Cited page with citations for your primary "text" and any other sources referenced in the essay.

6. Submit your final essay through the file created for you in the Google Drive by the deadline indicated on the syllabus.
