Othello: Term 3 Essay

The themes of Othello (friendship, loyalty, fate, prejudice, jealousy, fear, manipulation, pride, and honor) are deeply tied to the essential questions for this unit:

Is it important for an individual to conform to societal expectations? Should an individual always make choices for the better? How has the role of women changed over time? How have women and men interpreted each other’s roles? What is the effect of jealousy in interpersonal relationships? What is the importance of symbolism and imagery in literature?

For this essay you will have the following options:

Synthesis Essay: Othello and Short Stories

In a well-developed essay, you will synthesize Othello with at least two of the short stories we read (The Story of An Hour, The Schartz-Metterklume Method, and The Storyteller), and make a claim on how these texts illustrate the complexities of human relationships based on two of the themes we examined.

Literary Analysis

Many consider Iago to be an example “perfect villain” based on his actions and psychology in the play. In a well-developed essay, you will examine Iago’s characterization throughout the play and analyze the impact his actions had on the primary characters of the text (Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, Roderigo, Iago himself, etc.) through three of the themes we examined.

For both essays, you must consider crafting your thesis as an answer to one of the essential questions. (Ex: The refusal of Iago, Lady Carlotta, and the bachelor to conform to societal expectations and forcefully manipulate people lead to the dramatic destruction and corruption of their targets).
