Prof. Chelsea WhittonHU102.02 & .03The Artist as ReaderFall Semester 2019Researched Literary Analysis (20%)DeadlinesDue: Friday, December, 6Assignment Overview 1,500 to 2,000 words, double-spacedThis assignment asks you to choose one or two of the literary works we’ve covered this semester and perform a detailed critical analysis. Your essay should incorporate outside research that brings new insight or a fresh perspective to your understanding of the work. You should have a clear thesis statement, supported by evidence from the primary text (the work we read in class) and from secondary sources, which you’ll find through research. This essay is not a plot summary, response paper, book report, or explication. Instead, it is a persuasive analysis in which you apply your own ideas to the work of literature you are writing about. For MLA format guidelines, please visit the Purdue OWL page at this link: HYPERLINK " Started: I recommend beginning with a short list of thoughtful, open-ended questions about the work(s) you plan to write about. The best papers develop from genuine interest in the ideas and works being explored. Your response journals may be a good resource for developing such questions, and we will devote some in-class time to this as well.Once you’ve got a good, workable research question, the next task is to look for evidence in the primary text that can give you insight (and some answers) to the question you’re researching. At this point, it’s time to expand your research and look to see what others (scholars, critics and other writers/artists) can contribute to your quest. We’ll devote class time to research as well. The above steps constitute the most challenging part of this assignment. Asking good questions and finding good answers will make all of the difference in how easy you’ll find writing this essay. Organization— A strong thesis is key!Once you’ve got a solid research question and a working knowledge of the primary and secondary sources you plan to use, it’s time to outline your essay. Turning your research question into a claim will help you develop a thesis for your paper. Once you have a thesis, you should outline a clear essay with several points that support it, and structure your essay so that your ideas are clear, well-supported, and easy to follow. Audience: You should assume that your reader is familiar with the literature you are discussing and address that reader accordinglyA Good Literary Analysis Narrative Will…have a clear and developed thesis deal mostly with the primary work being discussed (at least 50% of your essay should directly discuss this work)use 1-2 outside sources (reviews, scholarship, or historical research) to support and bring nuance to your analysisuse MLA formatting for in text citations and works citedbe clear, organized, interesting, and well-edited
