Literary Fiction - York Region District School Board

What, exactly, is Literary Fiction?

Literary fiction can be differentiated from general fiction by the ‘richness’ of the writing. In general fiction, you get a good (we hope!) story with some interesting characters that is fairly straightforward. In literary fiction, we see deeper and more complex theme development (usually more than one), a wider use of rhetorical and figurative devices and language, a variety of narrative techniques and/or more complex narrative structures, and they are works that will really make you think about what you are reading. They tend to make some sort of statement(s) about society or humanity.
