CROSS-COUTRY BUYIG TRIP

If my recovery from knee-replacement surgery proceeds

without complications, I plan to drive to and from the

convention in Albuquerque this summer. I also hope to give a

seminar and run the PSS booth at the APS convention in

Sacramento. Therefore I will be able to visit almost anywhere

in the lower 48 to make purchases on this trip.

If you are thinking of selling some or all of your

precancels, this would be a good time to contact me to

possibly set up a visit. I am always in need of all kinds

of precancels, as long as they have town names on

them! I don't know how many more years I'll be able

to take these marathon drives.

At this point, it looks like I will have plenty of

new material available at the Albuquerque convention,

so please plan to attend. It is a great place to visit there are numerous spouses who will attend this site

and no other!

I hope to see you in Albuquerque or Sacramento,

or both!

THE GLE ALLE STAR ISUE

A significant portion of this issue is devoted to providing information about the Glen Allen, Virginia silent

star precancels. However, with a ¡°Glen Allen, Virginia¡± or ¡°Glen Allen, VA¡± town stamp on these precancels, they hardly fit the traditional definition of a

¡°silent¡± precancel. The information has been compiled in response to a member¡¯s request to see more information about Glen Allen. That being said, the

amount of material presented here is the result of many hours of research by

Bill Lehr, PSS 6902. When the call went out for material, Bill stepped up.

Seeing that he lives in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, the home of the American

Philatelic Research Library, I hope that he did not have to step very far.

Let me say on behalf of the Precancel Stamp Society, ¡°Bill, we appreciate

your work!¡± Further, any errors that may be in the presentation of the material

are mine as the writer/compiler and not Bill¡¯s, the researcher/collector.

PHYSICAL VERSUS VIRTUAL COLLECTIONS

Several years ago a member wrote about creating a virtual collection. At the

time, I scoffed at the idea. Even through I knew that repeated handling of the

pages would eventually lead to worn and ragged edges, grimy fingerprints on

the pages, and even the possibility of torn pages, I wanted to be able to thumb

through and look at my precancels. Using a computer to look at reproductions

just did not float my boat.

That being said, I can certainly see the merits of creating a virtual collection

of specific items, such as Glen Allen stars. Most of us do not have the financial resources to obtain a collection of scarce material. Further, because only a

limited amount of this kind of material is known to exist, very few people are

even able to accumulate a physical ¡°collection.¡± However, a virtual collection, with supporting documentation, such as a bibliography and a census,

could be an enjoyment to the owner and could easily be shared with other

interested parties.

USPS. I contrast this with my first receipt of an Art Deco Bird. Within a week

of its release in February 2011 at AmeriStamp Expo in Charleston, South

Carolina, I received a philatelic advertisement paid for with the Art Deco

The 3rd Edition of the PSS Bicent Catalog lists a number of items that have

not, as of yet, been confirmed. These items were listed based on information

that was deemed to be adequate back when the 3rd Edition of the Bicent Catalog was being created. This included reports from collectors as well as listings

in previous catalogs. However, the listing criteria for the Missouri State Catalog, now being ¡°vetted,¡± is more rigorous. The stamps (or scans or photocopies) must actually be seen by the editors to be included in the listings. The less

than 100 stamps listed on the next page will not be included in the Missouri

State Catalog and will be dropped from the next edition of the Bicent Catalog

unless they are confirmed. Your help is requested to accomplish this task.

Please send scans or photocopies of the listed items that you have so that I can

include them in these new catalogs. The address is shown above. Thanks to

Mike Gutman, Bob Bartlow and all of the members of the T & T Reporting

Group for their previous assistance in minimizing this list.

THE TOW AD TYPE COUTS ¡ª

A EJOYABLE FEATURE FOR MAY REASOS

Peter Newton, PSS #7389

Recently, there have been occasional pot shots taken in opposition to the continuing publication of the town and type counts, attacking their general relevance to the hobby and questioning the propriety of publishing them six times

per year, once for each of the five national regions, and once thereafter with a

complete all-states summary. I¡¯d like to see this feature continue. It was

started in The Forum over sixty years ago in 1950 by Harrington Adams (PSS

92-104) as straight town counts, on a region-by-region basis, published six

times per year, just as it is now.

Mr. Adams continued this work faithfully for thirty years, until by 1980, he

was no longer able to do so. The time-consuming task of making this information available to collectors was then taken over by David Hanschen (PSS

136-4651), and later by Arnold Selengut (PSS 194-4385), who is the present

editor of this regular feature of The Forum. A time-tested tradition of 62 years

should not be quickly disparaged nor lightly discarded. From its inception, the

regular reportage of the counts has popularized and maintained collector interest in town collecting, as well as town and type collecting.

I do not view the feature as any sort of contest between hard-driving brutal

competitors, as has been hinted at if not stated outright by its recent detractors. To me, the feature has many other and better purposes. While I am an

all-states general collector, I limit my omnivorous insanity to pre-1954 denominations, which tends to place most of the vinyl 800 and 900 series precancels outside the scope of my collection, except for occasional pre-Liberty

favors precanceled with vinyls prior to the adoption of the Code of Conduct.

Hence, it is not possible for me to rise in the rankings much beyond the comfortable mediocrity of the midrange.

This limitation is of no concern, as I am not in competition with anyone. To

view the town and type counts as the published result of some ¡°competition¡±

would defeat the entire purpose of stamp collecting for many, this writer in

cluded. Like many stamp collectors, I do not view stamp collecting as an appropriate venue for competition. Rather, it is an escape from the strife of necessary competition in one¡¯s otherworldly economic ventures.

The only thing I am running against in the town and type counts is the clock,

as I, like all of us, await my date with destiny and the other dinosaurs down at

the tar pits. In the meantime, publications of the town and type counts six

times a year serve as milestones in the journey toward a ¡°personal best¡± in

each of the categories. They allow me to check back against prior years, and

see how I am doing in that particular region, as well as how I¡¯m doing overall.

The counts allow me to see the relative balance of my collection as it grows,

and helps me identify states which could use some work to be brought up

more in balance with the other states.

True, I could accomplish these same objectives simply by keeping my own

records, but that presupposes a discipline that I lack. Arnold¡¯s reminders

emailed en masse to all reporters six times per year to get in their counts is

what makes me stop and ¡°tally up¡± that region for that year. Otherwise, the

chore, like so many others, would just slide on by, and I wouldn¡¯t have the

record I now have, nor the enjoyment I¡¯ve had, in seeing the documented

growth of my collection over the years. Surely I can¡¯t be the only one out

there who enjoys this simple pleasure, otherwise why would anyone in the

lower tiers like me even bother to submit reports?

Beyond that, the reports are a way to see the progress of my friends--people I

might see only once a year at regional meet or convention, or whom I may

have never met, but only corresponded with from time to time in the pursuit

of material or answers to various questions. In many ways, the publication of

the counts is a bi-monthly gathering of friends and acquaintances. One of the

reporters near the absolute bottom of the rankings is a past president of the

250-member Sacramento Philatelic Society, to which I also belong. His main

reason for reporting is that he¡¯s an all-around good sport, and has lots of fun

with his precancels, as well as many other aspects of philately. He is not trying to impress anyone, nor compete with anyone, as he does not need to. And

there many are other stories like his underlying the count reports.
