Redmond North Little League

Guidelines for Playing Up or Down

Current League rules define the age ranges for the different divisions as follows:

T-Ball – 6 and 7 yr. Olds

Sluggers – 7 and 8 yr. Olds

AAA – 9 and 10 yr. Olds

Coast – 10 and 11 yr. Olds

Majors – 11 and 12 yr. Olds

All players are to be considered eligible for play in the upper division of their age range.

Exceptions to these age limits will be granted as follows:

Playing Up

Requests by players to play at a higher level than their age category allows will be granted only under the following circumstances:

Minor and Major divisions (AAA, Coast and Majors)

1) Space permitting – Teams at all levels will be filled first with players of the appropriate age groups. If there are not enough players to create an even distribution for each team, then the Board of Directors will either a) decrease the number of teams in the division to bring the numbers into balance or b) allow enough qualified players (see rule 2) to play up to provide the balance.

2) Successful managerial evaluation – All players in these divisions must go through player evaluations before being drafted. Any player requesting to play up must have approval from at least 70% of the managers at the level the player wishes to move to in order to qualify to move up. The space permitting condition is mandatory before this condition is looked at.

T-Ball and Sluggers

1) No player under the age of 6 years old (league age – before July 31st of the current baseball year) will be allowed to play T-ball without approval from the T-Ball Coordinator and a manager from a team that the player would participate on. Parents of players requesting this waiver must contact the Player Agent and/or T-ball coordinator to arrange a tryout with the manager, who will evaluate the player’s skill level and appropriateness to play at the T-ball level.

2) Parents of 6 yr. Olds requesting to play up at Sluggers must contact the Player Agent or Slugger Coordinator. In order to qualify to play up, the player must: a) have participated in one year of organized baseball prior to the request and provide a written or oral recommendation from the previous year’s manager stating that the player is capable of playing at the Slugger level, or b) request a tryout with a manager of a team the player would participate on, who will evaluate the player’s skill level and appropriateness to play at the Slugger level.

All approvals to play up at these levels are subject to space availability per League rules

Playing Down

AAA, Coast and Majors

All players who would normally be subject to the draft for the divisions their age qualifies them for will be included in those drafts, with the following exceptions:

1) Safety issues: Following Player Evaluations, if it is the opinion of at least 70% of the managers at the level a player’s age qualifies him/her for, that the player would be a significant safety risk should he or she participate at that level, the player will not be made available for that division’s draft.

2) Medical issues: Parents of a player may petition for the player to participate in a lower division than the player is normally qualified for, due to medical concerns (physical and/or mental). This petition must be presented in writing or via email to the Player Agent at least two weeks prior to the Draft, explaining the condition or reason why the player should be exempted from being drafted at the upper level. The Player agent will then consult with the VPs of the two divisions affected by this, the player’s manager from the previous year if possible, and any other persons the Player Agent deems necessary, before making a decision on the petition.

3) If a player’s parent is selected as a Manager in a lower division, the player will automatically be removed from the upper division’s draft. A manager may also select one assistant Coach prior to the draft, and if that Coach has a player who would normally be available for draft in the upper division, that player will also be removed from the upper division’s draft.

Any request to allow a player to participate in a lower division than he or she is age- qualified for, that does not meet these three conditions, will not be considered. Any decision made with regards to these exceptions is subject to appeal in writing to the Board of Directors of Redmond North Little League.

T-Ball and Sluggers

A parent who feels their child should play at a lower level than the child would normally be qualified for (AAA to Slugger, or Slugger to T-Ball), due to skill level, safety or medical concerns, may request in writing to the Player Agent or the Coordinator of the lower division for this exception to be granted. The Player Agent and Coordinator will consult with the child’s manager from the previous year if possible, before granting the exception. If the manager feels the child is capable of playing at the upper level, then the Player Agent and Coordinator will attempt to resolve the issue with the parents before making a decision. Any decision made is subject to appeal in writing to the Board of Directors of Redmond North Little League.
