SubZero Robotics 5690 Represents Esko With Class

First and foremost, the kids did an incredible job of proudly representing the Esko community. Two of our team members, Paige Kesti (9th) and Kelby Cloose (10th) represented our team as regional ambassadors and led distinguished guests on tours of the event and helped out at the welcome/information table.

Two students interviewed for a distinguished Dean's list award, Kelby Cloose and Hunter Messner (11th) and while they did not earn an award at the regional competition they both did an incredible job with their interviews.

A group of students presented for a Chairman's award, the most prestigious award given by FIRST, Kelby Cloose, Karl Habig (11th), and Alicia Robnik (9th) and again, did a wonderful job of representing the best qualities of our team. While they didn't win the award, they learned a lot of valuable lessons that they are excited to incorporate into our team structure to move us even further in the future.

With respect to the competition, our team was ranked 52 out of 63 headed into alliance selection and we were honored to be chosen by the 2nd alliance captain. Even though our ranking was low, our drive team had performed extremely well and we were ranked 9th out of 63 robots in terms of our performance which helped us to be noticed by some of the top teams in the event. We were even more impressed when we were told, by the 1st alliance captain, that they were planning to pick us to their alliance. The drive team did an incredible job of getting us through quarterfinals, semifinals, and even forced the competition to go to 3 matches in the finals. Our alliance was able to get all four rotors turning in the semifinals and we had one of the highest scores posted for the entire competition. After giving it our best shot, we found ourselves taking home the "second place" honor for a second year in a row, which is incredibly hard to do!

We couldn't be more proud of the students and the way that they conducted themselves throughout the competition. At the end, even before our drive team realized that there would be no "re-play" on the last match, our lead driver, Ian Mills (12th) and coach Dylan Carlson (12th) went over to the opposing alliance to congratulate them on their win and well-earned trip to Championships. They both demonstrated such class and graciousness that it brought tears to my eyes.

One additional highlight for the team was getting to meet Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway and founder of the FIRST program! He stopped by for a little visit to see how things were going and to share an inspirational word or two with the robotics teams. It was definitely an experience that our students will remember for a long time.

The students, mentors, and coaches, want to say thank you so much to everyone who supported them over the three days of competition. To those who were able to actually make it out, we hope that you enjoyed yourself and got a new appreciation for why we do what we do! We will be heading to Iowa in just a few weeks to compete in a second regional where we hope to improve our performance and come home with a first place finish! We will continue to post updates on our Facebook page (Esko SubZero Robotics 5690) and hope that you will follow our journey!

MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON 3/13/2017 A meeting of the Esko Music Boosters was held in the band room on Monday, March 13, 2017. The meeting was called to order by President Lisa Stracek at 6:35 p.m. In attendance were: Lisa & Steve Stracek, Buzz & Shari Acker, Len & Lisa Robinson, Rachel Marsh, Rich Mowers, AnnaMarie Jokinen, Ashley Hart, Cass Schmitz & Jeff Laundergan. The minutes of the meeting from February 6, 2017 were read. The minutes were approved prior to being printed in the Esko Corner. Choir Report ? Rachel Marsh: State Choir Competition ? March 6 at UMD. Rachel was proud of her students and was happy with their performance. The Madrigals were excited by their performance. The students were stellar community members, and were very respectful at the competition. Spring Choir Trip ? March 25 ? 28. The choir is finishing up trip preparation, including 2-3 pieces and soloists. 2 students have decided last minute not to go on the trip. Shari Acker made a motion that the money allocated be used as scholarships to allow 2 other students to go. The vote passed unanimously. A suggestion was made that the choir students should submit photos and articles about their trip & experiences to the Esko Corner and Cloquet Pine Journal. Spring Music: Rachel is looking at variety show music, along with graduation and senior music. Band Report ? Rich Mowers: State Band Competition ? March 6 at UMD. 2017 was a better year of results. Small groups were better prepared. Woodwind quintet played difficult music and earned a score of 36. Flute duet played very difficult music and earned a score of 38. The saxophone quartet worked very hard and earned a score of 40. The Jazz band earned a score of 38, which is a huge accomplishment. Concert Band (Division II) earned scores of 34, 38 & 40 from the judges. Pep Band is playing at state girls' basketball on Wednesday, March 15 (March 17 & 18 if they win). They also have boys basketball section playoffs on Thursday, March 16 and (if they win) Saturday, March 18. Rich is looking at Hamilton & Frozen music for Senior Band. Junior Band is working on a variety of songs and sight-reading. 7th Grade Band is working on their major scales and playing a lot of music. 6th Grade Band is high energy, loud & strong. End of the 3rd quarter is Friday, March 24. Old Business: Jazz Dance February 25 ? From a player's perspective it was fun and had a neat vibe. From an audience perspective is was very difficult to see. We appreciated the people at the Bong Heritage Center and their willingness to work with us, but we will continue to look for another, more suitable, venue (i.e. Grandma's Sports Garden or Clyde Iron). We need a large enough space for people to watch and additional space for dancing. A lot of people are

Esko basketball's career scoring leader, Anna Townsend, left, met Minnesota basketball legend Janet Karvonen, during the Esko Sports Alliance Hall of Fame weekend Feb. 17-18. Townsend, now Anna Tool of Dassel, Minn., scored 1,966 for Esko before graduating in 1995. Karvonen, who led little New York Mills to three state championships in the late 1970s, held the state scoring record (3,192 points) until 1997 and is often credited with putting girls sports on the state map. Now Janet Karvonen Montgomery, she came to Esko from her home in North Oaks, Minn., to honor her friend Eleanor Randels, founder of Esko's girls sports programs. Randels and Townsend were among nine charter members inducted into the Sports Alliance Hall of Fame. (Esko Sports Alliance photo)

dancing and standing to watch. Special THANKS to Ashley Hart and her family & friends, including the 7th grade traveling basketball team parents for their help. Thanks also to AnnaMarie Jokinen & Cass Schmitz for volunteering their time and effort. 501c3 ? forms have been filed with the IRS (Federal) though June 2016. Our next report will be due in July 2017 for July 2016-June 2017. We still need to file with the State of Minnesota, but we need to upload our constitution/ bylaws, articles of incorporation and our goals and purpose. Thank you to Len Robinson for his help with this process. Esko Pull-Up Banner ? the layout & design was approved by the group. We will move forward with production by Stewart Taylor Printing. New Business: May Calendar: Elementary concert May 9, Jazz program May 11, Fine Arts Awards Night May 14, Band concert May 16 and Choir concert May 22. Graduation is June 2. Esko Music Boosters Officers ? Lisa Robinson (Treasurer) & Shari Acker (Vice President) let the group know that this school year would be their last year with our group, at least in an official capacity. Shari has been with the Music Boosters since the fall of 1993. These are huge shoes to fill, including their connections/contacts with the school and their organization of our group's fundraisers, not to mention the bookkeeping and accounting that Lisa does as Treasurer. As an organization, we need to do a better job of marketing ourselves and recruiting new parents. A suggestion was made to create a contact list with a point person for each band and each choir. Each point person would create a list of parents in their assigned band/choir to generate a support group. When the Music Boosters need help and/or volunteers, each point person would contact their list asking for help and volunteers. The Esko Music Boosters is always looking for new parents, not only to attend our monthly meetings, but to offer fresh ideas and volunteer their time. Scholarships ? Rachel Marsh & Rich Mowers need to distribute scholarship applications to seniors. Completed applications are due at the end of April, and will be reviewed at the Esko Music Booster meeting on Monday, May 1. Scholarships will be awarded at the Esko Education Foundation Scholarship Awards Night on May 7, and again at the Fine Arts Awards Night on May 14. Next meeting will be Monday, April 10 at 6:30pm in the band room. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Shari Acker. Seconded by Cass Schmitz. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeff Laundergan

Who should attend: Parents with children ages birth to age 8. Circle of Security has an emphasis on early childhood social-emotional development; however, the ability to reflectively meet the needs of your child is a life long process- therefore any parent or caregiver is welcome.

The Circle of Security? Parenting program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened. This reflective parenting model focuses on how children utilize the parent-child relationship to develop secure attachments. Secure attachments with caregivers become the foundation for which children then interact with others and feel confident in exploring the world around them. This social and emotional development of children then prepares them for success in their educational endeavors.
