MINUTES OF THE MAYNARD H. JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL

LOCAL school council meeting

OCTOBER 18, 2011

The Maynard H. Jackson High School, Local School Council met in regular session on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at 5:00 p.m.

The meeting was held at Maynard H. Jackson High School, 801 Glenwood Ave., Atlanta, GA 30316.

School Council Members present:

9/ (PLUS 1 VIA PHONE) members were present, representing a quorum.

1. Call to Order

Chairperson/Principal, Dr. Shirlene Carter called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m.

2. Pledge of Allegiance

Alex Greene led the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag.

3. Approval of Agenda

Chairperson/Principal, Dr. Shirlene Carter distributed the agenda posted pursuant to the Open Meetings Act.

Moved, seconded, and carried that the school council approve the agenda as presented.

MOTION: Amy Feng; SECOND: Alex Greene

VOTE: Agenda was approved with a few additions: IB Program, amend bylaws. The majority ruled and the agenda was approved.

4. Introduction of the Local School Council

All members present introduced themselves

5. Purpose of the Local School Council

Leslie Grant suggested that we need to address specifically Maynard Jackson’s Council needs. knowing the general purpose she would like the purpose to be specific to Maynard Jackson. (Working Action Plan for Maynard Jackson)

Ramiro Garcia wants to specifically address the “grey” areas of the school council’s laws. It was agreed that we will address Ms. Ponder with Mr. Garcia’s questions.

6. Approval of Minutes

Chairperson/Principal, Dr. Carter distributed the minutes of the 2010-2011 Meeting #5, meeting of the school council.

Moved, seconded, and carried that the school council approve the minutes of the 2010-2011 Meeting #5.

MOTION: Leslie Grant; SECOND: Sharonda Murrell

7. Report of Principal

Principal Dr. Shirlene Carter reported to the school council on

*SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT PLAN – Dr. Carter will present the school’s achievement plan minus the AYP data at the next meeting.

*AYP STATUS – Results not in yet, however, the 11th graders took the writing assessment on September 27th and 298th.

*LITERACY-READING/WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM - There are a few Literacy/Reading programs in place. Alex Greene spoke about the all-male book club. Dr. Carter asked for council’s support of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read/write)

*SLC/PARENT PORTAL – Rakesh Modi spoke about teachers using Google Docs to share lesson plans with the parents.

*YOU TUBE ANNOUNCEMENTS – There is a target date of November 1, 2011 to use You Tube as another form of communication between teachers, students, parents and the community.

*DANCE PERFORMANCE – Dr. Carter is asking for support of the Maynard Jackson dance program. There is an upcoming performance in November. Dr. Carter will try and email the specific date at a later time.

*LIVE VIDEO STREAMING CLASSROOMS – There is a target date of January 9, 2012 to introduce live video streaming of the classrooms allowing involvement of parents and business partners and the community.

IB PROGRAM – Sharonda Murrell shared that the Application for

Authorization of Maynard Jackson’s IB program should be submitted around mid-March.

A lot of our teachers will be attending training in level 1 category in the later part of October.

An IB consultant will be visiting Maynard Jackson on November 30th and December 1st to work with the staff and school board members to pull together the fit of IB and Maynard Jackson High School. Ms. Murrell asked for the council’s continued support of the IB program becoming a real aspect of Maynard Jackson.

Leslie Grant wants to know what resources we need to put in place for a successful launch of the IB program. Mrs. Grant expressed the fact that the community as a whole wants this to happen and suggests that maybe an IB Leadership Team, or an Advisory Board or some type of External Leadership be put in place on an as needed basis for a successful launch.

ELECTION OF LSC OFFICERS

Leslie Grant nominated Adelee LeGrand for the position of Chairperson. No other nominations were made. Adelee LeGrand was elected as Chairperson by a unanimous vote.

Dr. Carter nominated Arlesia McCullough for the position of Vice Chairperson. No other nominations were made. Arlesia McCullough was elected as Vice Chairperson by a unanimous vote.

Adelee LeGrand nominated Leslie Grant for the position of Secretary. Leslie Grant respectfully declined the nomination. Dr. Shirlene Carter nominated Kolandra Henry for the position of Secretary. No other nominations were made. Kolandra Henry was elected as Secretary by a unanimous vote.

Include SLC leaders on Council

A Student from each SLC

Take a look at the composition of a productive/successful council.

*It was suggested that we review the statue as far as attendance policy of council members.

*Newly elected Chairperson LeGrand took over the meeting as of 6:23 p.m.*

OTHER COUNCIL BUSINESS

It was decided that the agenda for the next meeting will be discussed by Dr. Carter and Ms. LeGrand and shared with everyone for feedback and input before finalizing.

Ms. LeGrand wanted the council to know that she is always open for discussion, not interested in running a dictatorship. Ms. LeGrand also inquired if there will be a call in number for every meeting for council members that may not be able to attend meetings. Ms. LeGrand also stated that she thought there should be a link on the school’s website for the Local Council info which should be available within 20 days.

Leslie Grant announced a community event in which Ann Cooper would be speaking on October 25 and 26 about Atlanta Farm to School.

With no further business to come before the school council, the meeting was adjourned at 6:38p.m.
