Women can pass on Italian citizenship to a child born on after January 1st, 1949, before this Italian citizenship could only be passed on from Father to child. Italian citizenship by descent is passed on only from parent to child. Italian citizenship was exclusive until 15 August 1992; therefore, the acquisition of any non-Italian citizenship meant the automatic renunciation of one's Italian citizenship.The applicant must provide proof that the last relative born in Italy was an Italian citizen at the time of birth of the next in line relative/applicant. If at any time an in line relative/applicant moved to another country after the initial emigration, proof of Naturalization/Non-Naturalization must be provided in order to demonstrate the unbroken Italian citizenship lineage.
