Agency Field instructors must be either a BSW with 2 years post gradation social work experience (for BSW interns) or a MSW with 2 years social work experience post MSW graduation (for MSW interns). While the School prefers that field instructors be licensed, it is not a requirement. Field Instructor training workshops are offered at least twice a year and are available on-line at the Field Education Program link on th School’s website. Field Instructors receive 5 CEU’s per semester for supervising interns. You receive the certificate at the end of the semester by mail.All Texas State social work interns purchase malpractice insurance and copies of the policy are available upon request.Faculty Liaisons visit the agency two times per semester for full-time (block) students and twice for part-time students (concurrent). The student’s Educational contract is reviewed and signed at the first field visit at the agency, and Final Field Evaluations are reviewed and signed at the end of the internship. The Field Instructor is required to do at least one-hour face-to-face individual supervision per week per intern. Group supervision is allowed when more than one intern is at the agency but should not be substituted entirely for the individual supervision.The student intern and the Field Instructor decide the scheduling of hours and agency workload. The Field Instructor must approve any time off for holidays or emergencies. Students must be allowed to attend the three-hour field seminar every other week, and 1st year Foundation MSW interns are also taking two courses while in field.Seminar/class time and travel time to the agency is not included in the required hours of internship, unless the travel is related to agency workload, i.e. home visits. Students are not covered by insurance to transport clients and if requested to do so by the agency, they must be willing to accept liability on their own automobile insurance or by agency insurance coverage and should receive mileage reimbursement.Student interns must comply with all agency requirements and procedures.BSW: SOWK 4645 & 4650500 hours at the agency (block); Part-time students do 250 over two semestersStudents have completed all coursework before fieldGeneralist placement – case management, intakes, information and referral, etc.Macro project – semester long project meeting an agency needProcess Recording – Field Instructor must review and give feedbackOther seminar assignments include logs, agency report, ethics paper, diversity assignment, SOAP Note, and a psychosocial assessmentMSW Foundation (1st year): SOWK 5410 & 5411360 hours (24 hours per week) while taking 2 social work courses Part-time MSW Foundation students intern over two semestersGeneralist placement with the same assignments as the BSW’sMSW Concentration (2nd year) or Advanced Standing: 540 hours at the agency for full-time (block) or 270 hours each semester for the part-timers (concurrent over two semesters) Direct Practice: SOWK 5612 & 5613 Clinical experiences in more specialized practice fields and should carry a caseload (micro & mezzo level)Seminar assignments include a logs, an ethics assignment, a diversity assignment, process recording, and an integrative paper/PPT presentation (psychosocial assessment, including diagnosis, assessment, treatment plan, and practice evaluation procedures)Administrative Leadership: SOWK 5622 & 5623Administrative, management, program development and evaluation, and research skills in an agency setting (macro level)The major assignments are a needs analysis, research proposal, literature review, and a research project with an evaluation component for the agency.FIELD PLACEMENT PROCESSThere are BSW and MSW interns in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. In the Fall semester, the application and interview process for the Spring internships begin. Students are interviewing with agencies by October and should finalize their placements by the end of November. In the Spring semester, the application and interviewing process for Summer and Fall internships starts in February, and students should finalize their placements by mid-April for the summer and the end of May for the Fall. Faculty Liaisons first contact the agency Field Instructor to confirm that she/he will interview the student(s) for that semester and to answer any questions. Then the student will be responsible for contacting the Field Instructor for an appointment for an interview.Students are encouraged to interview with at least two different agencies before finalizing their placements.The student will bring a referral form that the field instructor will fax or mail back to the School to indicate whether or not the student has been accepted as an intern.The student will also bring a current resume and a professional essay.Field Instructors must complete the Agency Site Application and Field Instructor Profile and submit a current resumeThe University’s Agency Affiliation Agreements must be signed by the Agency representative and the Dean of the College of Applied Arts in order to place students.FIELD EVALUATIONThere is a Mid-Term Progress Report that the student and field instructor complete and the student will turn that form in to the faculty liaison after the student has completed half of the required internship hours.The Final Field Evaluations for the different cohorts are similar in format and scoring. The 10 Behavioral Competencies are the same for each program (BSW, Foundation, DP, & AL), but the practice behaviors that the Field Instructor scores are different for the Direct Practice and Administrative Leadership interns; the BSW & Foundation practice behaviors are the same. The first page of the field evaluation is the grade sheet and is signed by the Student, the Field Instructor, and the Faculty Liaison. The evaluation can be scored with either letter or number grades, and has comment sections to be filled out.BSW and MSW interns receive a letter grade for field, and graduate students must receive at least a B to pass the courses.Final Field Evaluations are reviewed and signed at the agency field visit at the end of the semester (for part-timers at the end of the second semester). ................
