TRANSIT

INNOVATION BRIEF

PROJECT TITLE:

Regional Transit System Database

GRANT:

Transit TA-56 ($25,000)

PARTNERS/CONSULTANT:

Northwest Pennsylvania Regional

Planning & Development Commission,

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

GOAL:

To utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create a regional transit database for the fixed transit routes in the counties that we serve as a PennDOT planning partner. Use Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to plot the location of all the bus stops on the routes and create databases linked to those bus stops.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS:

The Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission produced a Regional Transit System Database that include transit route maps, GPS collected bus stops, and bus route/stop related data tables for three transit agencies (CATA, TAWC, and ATA) in our five rural county planning partner area. The data tables displayed a multitude of information (bus stop id, distance between stops, whether the stops had lighting, a bench, a shelter, etc., etc.) that the transit agencies can analyze. The benefit of the regional transit system database is it allows for better planning and management of limited resource for the transit agencies, both locally and regionally. The regional database will also provide transit agencies with ideas for future funding opportunities (i.e. where to add some shelters, lights, handicap accessibility, etc.). Copies of the regional transit system database were provided to all the transit agencies that were involved.
