advanced cabinet systems mentors high school students

April 30, 2013

Marion, Indiana—Advanced Cabinet Systems (ACS), a manufacturer of Division 12 Plastic Laminate Casework and Retail Store Fixtures, has partnered with local schools and developed a program encouraging students to consider pursuing careers in the woodworking industry. Advanced Cabinet Systems developed the program as an extension of the Architectural Woodwork Institute’s (AWI) Adopt-A-Shop program. The program developed by ACS is called myShop. It involves hosting students and discussing careers in the industry such as sales, marketing, regulatory compliance, engineering, and carpentry. The students will participate in discussions with employees in all fields of the woodworking industry. They will also participate in a guided facility tour where they will learn how a woodworking facility operates.

myShop was born in 2012 by Advanced Cabinet Systems in response to many schools discontinuing woodshop in their industrial arts programs. “We saw a need to educate students who, five and ten years ago would have had the opportunity to take a woodshop class in school. With so many schools eliminating those programs, it’s becoming paramount for companies, like ACS to get them involved in woodworking. Not only did we want them to learn about woodworking, but also about the different technologies in a modern manufacturing facility such as ours,” says Marc Dunker, Creative Director at ACS. ACS has planned their first myShop day for May 1, 2013 with a group from the Crossing Educational Center in Marion, IN. “We’ve generated interest from the local schools with our program and are excited to have an opportunity to encourage young people to become interested in the vast career choices in the woodworking industry. Giving them this exposure while they are still in the educational system may encourage them to pursue higher education geared toward our industry,” says Dunker.

ACS plans on expanding the myShop program to include job-shadowing and internship opportunities. “Career discussions and plant tours are just the beginning for myShop. We’re dedicated to helping the youth of America succeed, and programs such as myShop can help accomplish that,” explains Dunker.
