But we know it can be hard to know where to look since the hiring process is often decentralized and fragmented--and varies substantially by state! To help you in your search, we've curated this list of contract tracing job opportunities by state.

The state appears to have satisfied its contact tracer needs by reassigning existing staff and partnering with medical schools. You can check for updates on the Altogether Alabama site, which details the state's coronavirus response and allows visitors to get matched with volunteer opportunities.

In Arizona, contact tracing is completed by the local health departments; contact your local health department to inquire about opportunities.

Arkansas asks those interested to apply through its contractor, General Dynamics, on their contact tracer jobs site.

According to the state's coronavirus website, "The initial phase of California Connected, the state's contact tracing program, will utilize existing resources and redirect state employees to begin contact tracing efforts. Offers of additional support from the private sector and qualified members of the public are appreciated, but contact tracers from outside state government may not be needed until a future phase." Check jobs listings on the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment website; the state has indicated that it will hire contact tracers (which they call "disease investigators") as needed. Local health departments may also be hiring their own contact tracing staff.

There were no contact tracer positions on the state's employment site. However, the governor has spoken of a need for a regional approach; some local health departments may be hiring additional contact tracers.

Florida appears to be no longer recruiting contact tracers at this time. However, you can set an alert on the state's employment website to receive a notification if a new position is posted.

Hawaii has a program to train healthcare professionals to work as contact tracers; however, participants must have an undergraduate degree. Applicants can apply here.

Illinois appears to have taken down its contact tracing interest form and no longer be recruiting contact tracers. If they have additional positions, they will be listed on the state's coronavirus page.

Indiana has a contract with Maximus to handle its contact tracing system; however, at this time, no contact tracers jobs in Indiana were on Maximus' website.

The state appears to be handling contact tracing by reassigning existing staff and mobilizing members of the National Guard. Some local health departments, however, may be hiring additional contact tracers.

Kansas is reportedly handling contact tracing with volunteers; we could not locate any interest form on state websites.

A network of vendors does contact tracing; for information about these vendors and how to apply, see this listing of available contact tracing positions. Kentucky is also seeking student healthcare volunteers for contact tracers; those interested should complete this interest form.

Maine posts contact tracing positions here. The state is also recruiting volunteers through its Maine Responds Emergency Health Volunteer System.

Maryland hired more than 1,000 contract tracers through a partnership with NORC. If additional contact tracers are needed, positions will be listed on NORC's website.

Massachusetts has contracted with Partners Health to handle contact tracing the state. Partners Health has stopped accepting applications at this time, but if additional positions become available, they will be posted here.

Michigan has asked for volunteers to fill out this contact tracing interest form.

The state appears to be filling contact tracing positions with existing employees.

We were unable to find any evidence Mississippi is currently hiring contact tracers.

Missouri's contact tracing appears to be done at a local level, so you may wish to contact your local health department. St. Louis County hired a large number of contact tracers, but currently has met their needs. If further contact tracers are needed, the positions will be posted here. Kansas City, MO, is still hiring contact tracers as indicated on their hiring site.

Montana's contact tracing appears to be done at a local level, so you may wish to contact your local health department. A recent article on COVID-19 in Montana suggests that RiverStone Health is handling contact tracing hiring for one of the hardest-hit areas of the state, Yellowstone County.

At this time, Nebraska has met its contact tracing needs. However, if additional positions open up, they will be posted on the contact tracing page of contactor PRC.

Media reports from June 2020 suggest the state is planning to hire hundreds of contact tracers; however, no positions appear to have been posted yet. We expect postings to be listed on the state's list of open positions.

At the moment, New Hampshire appears to have filled its contract tracer positions. However, any new positions will be posted on the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services website.

At the moment, New Mexico appears to have filled its contact tracer positions. However, this could change; applicants should log into the State Personnel Office website and navigate to "View Job Opportunities and Apply" at the top right.

The state is hiring through the Carolina Community Tracing Collaborative.

North Dakota appears to have filled in contact tracing positions for the moment. When additional openings are available, they will be posted here.

Ohio appears to have filled its contact tracing positions for the moment. When additional openings are available, they will be posted here.

The state has announced plans to hire additional contact tracers, but currently there are no active job postings. It is expected that future job postings will be shown here.

Contract tracer jobs are listed on the Work in Texas website. You may also wish to contact your local health department, as the process seems fairly decentralized.

The state is working with the University of Utah to recruit contact tracers. All details can be found here.

Vermont is not hiring contact tracers at this time. If this changes, postings will most likely be listed on Vermont's COVID information site.

Open positions are described in the orange box at the bottom of the Virginia Health Department webpage. Please note, however, that candidates must apply through one of the recruiting agencies partnering with the State of Virginia to fill these positions. Click here for details.

At this time, the District of Columbia appears to have filled its contact tracing needs. However, if additional positions become available, they will be listed here.

Washington State does not appear to be hiring contact tracers; it is meeting its contact tracing requirements through mobilizing the National Guard and enlisting existing public health personnel. However, they are recruiting volunteers to help with contact tracing.

This article describes West Virginia's highly decentralized approach to contact tracing. It appears all prospective contact tracers must first take an online contract tracing from West Virginia University.
