Arranging for Blood Draws for MRT testing
ARRANGING FOR BLOOD DRAWS FOR MRT TESTING
(Current Jan 2013)
There are various options for blood draws for LEAP clients. Your options may also vary depending on if your client is local or in another location.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
LEAP-MRT Specimen Mailer
Completed MRT Requisition Form
Some options/considerations:
1. Wherever client previously has had their blood drawn.
2. Client’s personal physician or laboratory.
3. RD as phlebotomist (One day phlebotomy courses available in some states.)
4. Friend or relative that is also a qualified phlebotomist, nurse, doctor, EMT, etc.
5. Local hospital laboratory.
6. Lab such as Quest, LabCorp(varies by lab/area), AnyLabTestNow, etc. (more below)
7. National blood draw service such as PSI (Phlebotomy Services International)
Lab the client normally uses for blood draws is likely your first choice. If they are not sure about the lab doing a draw for them, call their local lab/phlebotomist ahead of time, explain what it is the client is needing, explaining the need to overnight the bloodwork the same day, so draw must be done in a timely fashion related to local Fed Ex pick up times at the lab, or local Express Drop-off deadlines at the local shipping centers. (Caution, some FedEx locations will not ship blood.)
After receiving payment for testing and/or counseling, refer for blood draw. Be sure paperwork is explained and that client knows that the DATE AND TIME of the blood draw MUST be noted on the MRT Requisition Form. ALSO, the MRT Req Form MUST go WITH the bloodwork to Oxford Laboratory. (Client OR phlebotomist can record this. Point this section out to the client.) If you don't have an account on file at Oxford for payment, then payment MUST be included with blood work. (Upper R hand corner of page 2 of MRT Req Form)
LOCALLY: If you anticipate (and I hope you do) referring more than one person to a local lab for a draw, we recommend the following.
1. Call local lab. Ask to speak to the lab manager. If not in, ask when to call back, then connect later.
2. Explain who you are, that you work with a lab in another state, but need to find a local lab for phlebotomy services for your patients. Ask if you can come by with a kit to explain. Set an appointment to meet with the lab manager.
3. Stop by early in the day. Bring cookies or Hershey Kisses for staff! ;-) Explain to manager that "this is new to me, so I need your help." (Lab people like to "help.")
4. Show kit, paperwork, FedEx prepaid mailer, etc. Explain how the blood work MUST go out overnight. Ask about their Fed Ex pick-up times. (Tell clients to arrive at least 1 hour prior to that.) If no daily pick-up, would they allow client to hand deliver sealed Fed Ex mailer to Fed Ex or can they call for same-day pick-up?
5. Find out about charges for draw and/or if they bill client's insurance for the draws. (Might range from free to $46, depending on the lab.)

The procedure to use them is as follows:
1. Call PSI at 855-600-3722 or 541-664-4382 Option 2 (Nicky or Hanna) Monday through Friday from 7:00am – 4 pm PST. And/or email at Info@.
2. If you get an answering machine, leave a message. They should get back to you that same day or the next day at the latest.
3. They will take your client information and payment over the phone and schedule the date for blood draw.
4. The patient must have a specimen mailer with your requisition form fully completed. PSI will not provide specimen mailers, they will only draw and ship the blood.
5. They will track and do everything they can on their side to make sure the blood draw is accomplished.
6. The patient should confirm with them that the blood work WILL be sent overnight the same day as the draw via FedEx.
7. The patient should call the FedEx tracking code into Oxford (1-888-Now-LEAP or 561-848-7111). If it is after 4 pm MST and they reach voice mail, they may leave their name and the tracking code on the answering machine.
