Others of you are just newly arrested, waiting, waiting, and more waiting! You are waiting to see the judge, to go to trial, to be sentenced, to be shipped off to prison, or to be released. Your life has been turned upside down. You may have been arrested at your home to the horror of your family, or on the job in front of your peers, or actually in the act of committing a crime. For some, you may have been falsely accused, or maybe you are guilty and are trying to beat the charge. For many, this time of incarceration is God's mercy. This maybe God's way of getting your attention or even protecting you from the risks of your own bad choices out on the streets. This time of incarceration, if you choose, can be a time of drawing closer to God, your Creator.Regardless, you are behind bars. How are you going to do your time? Are you going to live in the negative world? Or are you going to be ‘set free’ from your own personal bondage? It's your choice. Are you going to live for God? You can see how well you’ve done so far without Him. It’s time to choose - this day.If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, stop now and read, "Death Row Pardon Refused" on page 2. If you are a new Christian, we encourage you to continue and apply the following principles to your life so that you can be set free and live an abundant spirit-filled life, even Behind Bars. It is through the Word of God that we, as believers, can understand God's will for our lives, to share His word with other believers, and to be able to fight the good fight when evil and temptation are knocking at our front door. If we read and study God's Word, how can we not do the above? Find someone with whom you can study the Bible with. Be careful who you choose. Not everyone believes in the same Jesus.A CHILD OF GOD PRAYS DAILY1 Thess 5:16-18 Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.As you study the Word, God speaks to you. As you pray, you speak to God. Prayer is bringing your needs for yourself and those around you before the Holy of Holies, before God our Father. Start right from the beginning, plan to pray for yourself and those around you for half an hour a day.A CHILD OF GOD SHARES HIS FAITH WITH OTHERSProv 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. We, as Christians, have a privilege and a responsibility to build up the Kingdom of God here on earth by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. We can witness to others in many different ways. A CHILD OF GOD MAKES A COMMITMENT TO LIVEA GODLY LIFESTYLEIf you want the blessing of living a Godly lifestyle, it is important that you are willing to stay away from those areas of prison life that may cause someone to question your commitment. If you aren't willing to Walk the Talk, don't try to witness to people. If you have outwardly, blatant, unrepentant sin, you can do more harm than good by witnessing for Christ. People watch those who profess to be Christians very closely, waiting for a chance to bring accusations.Your Relationship withOther InmatesASSOCIATE WITH THE RIGHT CROWD1 Cor 15:33 Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."Find the right group of Christians who have the same goal of glorifying God. Surround yourself with solid believers who are strong in their faith and walk.AVOID THE WRONG CROWDHeb 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.Try to hang around with your brothers or sisters in Christ. By avoiding the wrong crowd, you will save yourself a lot of problems. A LOT of problems.AVOID PETTY THEOLOGICAL DISPUTES2 Tim 2:14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.Stick to the basic truths of the Bible. When you get into a theological disagreement, no one comes out a winner. If you get angry you will only damage your testimony and God's reputation. Your purpose is not to win arguments, but to witness for Him.DON’T BE A SNITCH1 Thes 4:11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you.Always cover a potential problem with prayer. God sees everything. He is in control. Allow God to deal with it in His own time. He is a God of justice.AVOID GANG ACTIVITYGal 5:19-23 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.Getting involved with the wrong crowd from the start is a problem. Once you are in, it's often very hard to break out of that crowd and the stereotypes that go along with those associations. Avoid any illegal activities that are proposed to you from the wrong people. Share Jesus with them.AVOID DEBTSRom 13:8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.Avoid gambling while you are in prison. Avoid borrowing money, commissary, and apparel. Often indebtedness is a means of controlling a person.AVOID IMMORAL SEXUAL ACTIVITYCol 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.Any immoral sexual activity is a tool of Satan to keep you from the blessings of the Father. Avoid any immoral sexual behavior, especially sexual favors and/or obligations.Your Relationship with“The System”SUBMIT TO AUTHORITYAnd the system will work for youRom 13:1-3 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. God has established the authorities that exist. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted. In addition, those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and He will commend you.Respect authority as you would want to be respected. When you follow the rules and regulations of the institution, you can make it work for you. Even though it’s difficult to curb emotions sometimes, allow God to work in every situation.“Death Row Pardon Refused”Jerry was a walking time bomb, ready to explode. One day he did explode. When a drug deal went bad, he killed three drug dealers and four innocent bystanders. Jerry was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to death.Three days before his scheduled execution, Jerry had an unlikely occurrence---Jerry had his first visitor ever. When the visitor entered his solitary, death-row cell, Jerry noticed that this visitor was wearing a suit and carrying a Bible. When the man sat down, he said, “Jerry, I want to share with you some good news”. When Jerry heard this, he went into a fit of rage and jumped the visitor. Immediately, five guards came to subdue Jerry. Other guards came to rescue the visitor and escort him out. As the visitor was being escorted out, he could still hear Jerry yelling, "You're all hypocrites! Religion never helped me in all my life! Where was Jesus when I needed him most!?”Jerry had his second visitor that day--the Warden of the institution. "Jerry,” the Warden whispered, “I see that you had a visit today from our GOVERNOR". "What!?" screamed Jerry. "That man was the Governor!?" "Yes,” said the Warden. “And what's more, he had a stay of execution in his hand--a pardon for you. But, Jerry, you attacked the man and wouldn't even listen to him." Jerry pleaded with the Warden to write, on his behalf, a letter of apology.On the morning of Jerry's execution, a letter from the Governor’s office arrived. To Jerry's horror, stamped on his unopened letter to the Governor, were the words, "Pardon Refused." When Jerry was asked if he had any final words, he paused and said, "Tell people everywhere you go that even though I was a murderer, I was not executed for my crime of murder. I was executed for refusing the Governor's pardon."You see my friend; I am sharing this story with you because we have a pardon to share with you. A pardon not of human origin but that of divine origin. Let God into your LifeWhat will you do? Will you accept it, or will you reject it like Jerry? That pardon comes through accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. Salvation is a free gift! All you have to do is receive it. Are you willing to receive it today?If you would like to accept Jesus Christ, please pray this prayer in your heart now: “Lord, today I ask forgiveness of all my sins. I accept your Son, Jesus Christ, into my heart as my Lord and Savior. From this day forward, I seek and desire Your will for my life. In name of Your Son Jesus, I pray. Amen.”If you are like most people, from time to time you find yourself in difficult trials. Those unwelcome moments of life, you and I wish we could escape. In fact, that may describe your life today!When these trials come, how do you respond? How do you respond when the hurt is real? How do you respond when you feel that the walls are closing in? How do you respond when things happen totally outside of your control? How do you respond?Allow me to offer some sound biblical direction…and some words of encouragement. I want to show you how those trials can in fact be a tremendous blessing in your life.The Right PerspectiveSeeing life's trials as a blessing starts with having the right perspective. God’s perspective.That perspective is this: God allows trials in your life to help you grow up…to mature you in Him. In other words, you will never grow in your walk with Christ without trials. God uses them to be your teacher and to make you into the person He wants you to be.If there was one person who knew trials, it was the Apostle Paul. Can you imagine what it must have been like when he was shipwrecked for days? Here he was seeking to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to the uttermost parts of the world, and yet he was shipwrecked and in the water for days.Why didn't God stop the shipwreck? He could have, but why didn't He?Because, if He had, Paul would have never become the man and leader God intended! Paul became the great man of God by experiencing these trials and testing. Ultimately, God knew (and knows!) what He’s doing.Now here's the lesson for you and me. You and I must trust God! He knows what He’s doing with your life and mine. The sovereign God knows what is necessary for us to experience in our lives and how much to permit in order to mature us.It really is amazing that the moment we fall into a trial that is out of our own control we begin to beg God, "God get me out of this! God what's wrong? God if you'll just take this problem, Lord, I'll be fine!"What we never stop to consider is what God might be doing…trying to change you and me,?not?the circumstances! He may (and He will) change the circumstances, but meanwhile He wants to teach you and me a lesson. And you'll miss out on the blessing by constantly begging Him to change the circumstance and not giving Him a chance to speak to us!Our ResponsibilitySo what is our responsibility in the process of trial and testing?James tells us in James 1:4 that?"Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."How do you do that? James 1:4-12 gives us a pretty clear direction.Don't rebel against your circumstances.?Allow the testing process to be brought to completion so that you may receive the maximum benefit of God's teaching.Ask for wisdom.?I want to tell you, believer, you have a secret code to a safe that is full of tremendous resources. And the resources go totally unused by so many Christians. That "safe" is God's wisdom.God's wisdom is perhaps the greatest tool for your spiritual growth! God's wisdom is the defogger for our fuzzy lenses. And when you ask the Lord for wisdom…when you pray for wisdom…you are opening yourself up to learn about God's overall purpose and plan. You are beginning to see God's big picture.Rejoice in the midst of your trials.?James 1:12 tells us we can truly rejoice in the midst of trials. Why? Because the victories are already won! Our victories are in Jesus and He already won the victory. That's why you and I can claim the victory. Regardless of your circumstances, you already have the victory. The battle is won!“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds…." James 1:2Friend, I don't know what trial you may be going through today, but I want to challenge you to embrace it as God's design to bring you to full maturity in Him. Thank Him today what He is doing in your life, and for the blessing of your trial!Bible Verses About ChangeThere seems to always be a guarantee in life that change will happen. Change is something we tend to fear and become anxious about because we do not feel in control of life. The good news is that God has a plan for your life to hope, future, and to prosper. If we trust in God and allow the change to grow us to become more like Jesus Christ in how we respond and act, then we are promised that all things will work together for good for those who love Him and keep His commandments! We hope this list of Bible verses and stories of change will give you peace and encouragement as you face the difficulties in life.2 Peter 3:9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.Deuteronomy 31:6Be strong and courageous. I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.James 1:17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.Jeremiah 29:11For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.Joshua 1:9Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”1 Corinthians 6:11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.Malachi 3:6“I the LORD do not change. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.Philippians 4:6-8Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. "Behold, I have set before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little strength, and have kept My Word and have not denied My name."The night of October 27, 2008 this Scripture was placed upon my heart and opened the door to my accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior while I was serving time behind the wall. The Open DoorThe biblical promise of an open door which no one can shut sounds almost too good to be true. And yet this is exactly what is promised in Revelation 3:8. Wow! Does this mean God is promising me an open door to that better job or position I've been looking for? Does it mean my practically nonexistent love life is about to open up in answer to my prayers? Does it mean I can claim an entrance into any "closed door" in front of me? Unfortunately, the answer to all these hypothetical questions is simply, No! The promise of an open door in Revelation 3:8 has nothing to do with better jobs or love lives, etc.Now it may appear that the questions above contain overstated examples. It is a fact, however, that Revelation 3:8 has been wrongly applied to all kinds of "doors" by well-meaning Christians. This kind of improper application of Bible promises has left some believers bitterly disappointed when the "open doors" they claimed did not materialize. Well then, what is the open door that is promised in Revelation 3:8, and how should this definite promise be applied to growing Christians today?3050482195708600One of the basic rules of applying any Scripture to ourselves is always to move from the question, "What did it mean then?" to the question, "How do we apply it now?" In other words, we cannot just jump into any promise of the Bible and indiscriminately apply it to any situation facing us today. We must first see from the Bible to whom the promise was originally made and under what exact conditions the promise was given. Then from that historical framework we can move to a well-grounded and properly "controlled" application for ourselves today.The promise of the open door is contained in one of the letters addressed to the seven churches found in the second and third chapters of Revelation. These first century churches were located in the province of Asia (called Asia Minor today) of the Roman Empire. In the seven letters, the Lord directly addressed these churches and spoke to them of their spiritual condition. He commended them for their good points and rebuked them for their shortcomings. He gave the promise of the open door to the church of Philadelphia. Although this church was just a small feeble church, they had kept the Lord's Word and they had not denied the Lord's name. They had been obedient to the Word of God in the face of increasing external pressures and persecutions from the pagan Roman world. And they had not been contaminated internally with the watered-down view of the Person and work of Christ such as the early gnostics were propagating. (Such false teaching later developed into the second century heresy known as Gnosticism.) On the basis of their faithfulness, the Lord promised the church of Philadelphia an open door of opportunity to advance God's kingdom.We don't know all the historical details of how the church of Philadelphia took advantage of its God-given opportunity to witness to the surrounding pagan region. However, we do know that a vigorous Christian testimony continued at Philadelphia when the lights of many other early churches were snuffed out. In fact, the light of the Gospel of Christ continued to shine out from Philadelphia over the furious waves of Roman persecution. In later centuries, when Islam swept across Asia Minor, Philadelphia remained as a Christian island in the midst of a Moslem sea. The fact that the letters to the seven churches are included in the Holy Scriptures is evidence that God intended them to be used by His people beyond the first century. Throughout Church history individual Christians, as well as whole congregations of God's people, have found conviction and strength in this portion of the Word of God. The promise of the open door has challenged many godly believers over the years to take advantage of the definite opportunities the Lord has given them to serve Him. Such claims upon the promise of the open door have certainly been valid and proper applications of Revelation 3:8.Many students of Scripture are convinced that there is a further aspect to the interpretation of the letters to the seven churches. Each of the seven churches may represent a successive stage of church history as it unfolded, beginning with the "Ephesian Church" of the apostolic days to the "Laodician Church" of the last days. There are many good features about this view and, if true, the promise of the open door is particularly appropriate to the span of church history which began around the end of the 18th century and continues even today. The great revivals and worldwide missionary efforts and other evangelical ministries that began during this period were all part of the blessings of the open door that the Lord gave and continues to give His Church.In any case, the letters to the seven churches of Revelation certainly have an application to Christian churches today. The spiritual condition of every church is still important to the Lord. His exhortations and encouragements to the seven first century churches are very appropriate and pertinent to 20th century churches. The promise of the open door can be claimed by any Christ centered and Word centered church today. Regardless of the numerical size and natural strength or even the amount of spiritual gift within that church, there definitely will be an open door given to that church a God-given special opportunity to advance the kingdom of God in some way. The open door may be a radio ministry or literature ministry. It may be a citywide youth ministry or beyond the call of duty foreign missions ministry. It may be an inner-city ministry or college campus ministry, depending on the location of your church.3033684307523900If you are part of a feeble struggling church where nothing seems to be happening and there seems to be no spiritual fruit or growth, do not despair. As long as your church is composed of brothers and sisters who love the Lord and His Word, the promise of the open door is as good for you as for the church of Philadelphia. Look for it! Do not let excuses of "barren fields" and "we tried" blind you and keep you from the open door which God has given your church. But remember that the open door "set before you" must be entered. Going through is not automatic and not part of the promise. Perhaps you are the individual in your congregation that God is raising up to lead (not drive!) the others in the fellowship through the door of service that God has opened for your church.What about the personal application of the open door promise? Is it valid for individual growing Christians to claim this promise today and look for the open doors that God has personally given them? Yes! Nevertheless, remember that it is a door of opportunity to serve the Lord, not a guarantee of a better job or love?life or whatever. The open door is a God-given opportunity for you personally to advance His Kingdom in your early life as a Christian. Yes, if you love the Lord and are trying to be obedient to His Word, God has an open door opportunity for you. This does not necessarily mean that the Lord is calling you to leave the secular world and go into full?time ministry. Furthermore, it does not necessarily mean that your door of opportunity will be an up-front leadership role in an outstandingly successful Christian ministry. Your open door of service may be much more obscure like plugging along as a faithful and caring Sunday school teacher. (Incidentally, you never know whose Sunday school class the next Billy Graham will come from!) Your door of opportunity right now may be the unglamorous one-on-one campus or office faith sharing that is open before you. Your open door may be the opportunity to evangelize your neighborhood, starting with your own family.We could continue to list all kinds of possible open doors that the Lord has set before us individually. However, the important truth to realize at this point is that right now there is some definite open door for service before you. Go for it! Now! You do not have to force the door open. Our text says that the door has been opened and no one can shut it. In fact, we limit our ministry when we force open doors of our own choosing. Go for the open door before you, not for some closed door beyond which the grass may look greener.Remember, we are not referring here to doors involving our physical and spiritual needs where the Lord expects us to "knock". (See Matthew 7:7?11 and Luke 11:9?13 and note the context.) These closed doors will be opened in answer to our prayers, and our needs (but not necessary our wants!) will be met in ways that are best for us. However, the door of Revelation 3:8 is open already. It is the door of opportunity for serving the King of Kings.How tragic that some of us will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ and have to confess that we did not really believe the promise of the open door. Excuses such as "What door?" and "All the doors were closed!" will not stand the test, and none of us will be able to say we did not have the strength to enter God's open door of opportunity. Revelation 3:8 indicates that only a little strength is necessary to qualify for the promise of the open door.Let us not miss the open door that the Lord Himself has set before us as individual growing Christians. The more you get involved in using your natural abilities and spiritual gifts in service for Christ, the more clearly you will see your door of opportunity. Further areas of service will become obvious as you take advantage of the opportunity that is set before you now. No one else can do exactly what you can do in service for our Lord. Your love for the Lord and His Word and the little strength that you have are all that is needed to claim the promise of the open door.
