Long Division Lesson Plan

Grades: 4,5

PREPARATION: Essential Question: How do you solve a long division problem and how will learning this help me improve my math skills?

Objectives:

? Students will be able to list and complete the different steps in a long division problem.

? Students will be able to explain how to do a long division problem. Standards:

State: 2.1.4.F: Understand the concepts of addition and subtraction and their inverse relationships; understand the concepts of multiplication and division; use the four basic operations to solve problems, including word problems and equations.

2.2.4.B: Multiply single and double digit numbers and divide by single digit numbers and divide by single digit numbers.

Assessment Anchor/Eligible Content:

M4.A.2: Understand the meanings of operations, use operations and understand how they relate to one another.

Anticipated Accommodations/Modifications:

1. Give students their own copy of the steps for completing a long division problem. 2. Put the different steps in a different color for students to see each step. Materials needed:

? Long Division Rap ? Does McDonalds Sell Cheeseburgers paper ? Long division interactive smart board presentation. Procedure: Beginning 1. Hook/ Transfer of Knowledge

1. Write a problem up on the board: Mrs. Bair brought 9 cookies into school to share with Miss Miller and Miss Conrad. How many cookies would each teacher receive?

2. Ask the students which operation they are using. (division)

3. Ask the students to discuss in their groups how they would solve this.

4. Ask volunteers to tell you how to solve the problem. (split method, one for you, one for you, one for me)

5. Leave the same problem up on the board but change the number of cookies to 127. Ask the students: Do we want to sit here making 127 tally marks? Ask them if they think there is another way they could do it, let them share if they have any ideas.

6. Introduce long division. (long division rap) Ask the students to listen for the different steps.

Middle 1. Development of concept

1. Tell the students that since there are a lot of steps to long division you are going to give them an acronym to help remember them. (Does McDonalds Sell Cheeseburgers?)

2. Underline the first letter of each word (be sure to underline the b in burger as well)

3. Tell the students that each letter stands for a step.

4. Go through each step and ask the students to identify the word (Does=divide, McDonalds= Multiply, Sell= Subtract, Cheese= Check, Burger= Bring down)

5. Go through a problem with the students telling you which step to complete. Model how they can use their multiplication charts to do the division part)

6. Ask if there were any confusing parts and if students were confused go over the parts they were confused.

2. Learning Activity:

1. Hand out graph paper and the Does McDonalds Sell Cheeseburgers guide papers

2. Bring up the interactive smart notebook.

3. Complete a problem from the smart notebook together.

4. Ask students what to do each time to get them used to the process.

5. Complete another problem together.

6. Ask students if they would like to try one with a partner or if they want to do another one together as a class.

7. If there is time ask the students to try one on their own.

End 5. Additional Practice/Homework:

1. Take home spiral review and complete any problems that are marked incorrect.

6. Closure/ Formative Assessment: 1. Tell students that there were a lot of steps involved in long division ask them what

they were (Divide, multiply, subtract, check, bring down) 2. If they got the chance to try a problem on their own. Collect it.
