Setting Career Development Goals - DIsample2

HUMN NTR 4596: Dietetics Seminar, Autumn 2013

Setting Career Development Goals

Background Information:

A development goal is a statement of a desired outcome or accomplishment that is specific, observable and realistic. Your goals may be to obtain a specific position, to work in a specific segment of the dietetics field, or become certified in a specific dietetic area of expertise. When you set your goals, don’t get too hung up on job titles, as they are not always accurate. Concentrate instead on the knowledge, skills, and abilities you will use. Set a reasonable time frame indicating when you would like to reach your career goals. Keep in mind that your career goals should be realistic and attainable-ones that are reachable through your ongoing efforts to gain experience and education.

After forming your goals, develop a plan of action (Development Activities) detailing how you will reach your goal. This should be a step-by-step statement of the specific activities needed to enhance your education, skills, knowledge, or experience and meet your goal. Be specific and set dates (i.e. “In the next year I will ….)

There are a wide range of potential developmental activities (actions) to consider in achieving your goals:

■ Pursue an academic degree (You are currently doing this!)

■ Become active in professional organizations (e.g., dietetic, culinary-related, sports)

■ Seek out leadership positions

■ Volunteer for a special project or with a nutrition-related organization

■ Pursue a certification program

■ Conduct informational interviews

■ Seek a mentor(s)

■ Attend seminars/conferences (on-campus and off-campus)

■ Request new assignments in your current job

■ Move to a new job within the organization

■ Obtain on-the-job guidance from someone who is more expert in a specific area

■ Experience self-paced learning (books, videos, computer-based instruction, etc.)

■ Enroll in additional college courses

■ Work in a different segment of the industry (e.g., foodservice, healthcare, community, fitness)

Answering the following questions will be helpful in developing your professional goals.

What areas of my future profession do I enjoy?

What are my current professional interests?

What do I want my future practice area to be? (Remember to review the list of Dietetic Practice Groups for ideas)

Once you know your strengths and weaknesses, you will know what areas to promote and can formulate your goals for where you would like to be.

Look at the factors above and list items that have an impact on your career. What is the education that you need? Can you get a job anywhere or only in a certain part of the country? Do you want to work in a office environment or can't stand the thought of being tied down all day? Is the industry you are aiming for in a growth spurt, or are there too many qualified people now? These are all factors that you can't control which will influence your career. Knowledge of these issues can help you make better decisions.

Career Goal Assignment, Part Two (10 points)

Due Sept 5, 2013.

Part 2: Develop a Career Goal Statement

Write a one paragraph statement describing your short-term goal or goals (next 1-3 years, including internship/grad school) and a second paragraph describing your long-term goal or goals (in 3-5 yrs). Each paragraph should include the following:

1. One sentence describing your goal or goals. (WHAT)

2. A short description of past or current experiences (e.g., jobs, volunteering, research, sports), strengths, weaknesses or interests that have led to your goals. If graduate school is a goal, include your reasons for pursuing an advanced degree (e.g., advanced training in a particular area, develop research skills) (WHY)

3. Describe specific developmental activities (plan of action) that you will complete to accomplish each of your goals. (HOW)

When developing your goal statement consider: WHAT, WHY, HOW?

As starting points, you may modify the biographical /goal statement written for your application to the Dietetics Program or the HUMN NTR 295(2295) Goal Setting assignment.

This statement will be included in your Professional Portfolio, and an edited version will be part of the Personal Statement that is required in the internship/graduate school application.

Sept 5, 2013. Turn in:

Both pages of SWOT analysis (Part 1), typed, in DROPBOX by 11:59 pm

1 page maximum, typed, double-spaced Career Goal Statement (Part 2), HARD COPY- due IN CLASS

Mistakes to Avoid:

Do not use phrases such as “I feel…”, “I would like to…”, “I am hoping…”.

(Use more assertive language such as “I plan to…”, “I am looking forward to…”, “My goal is to…”)

Write a Goal Statement , not a Personal Statement

Statements tend to be too long. Make them shorter but more unique to you.

Delete “general” statements that are not about you.

Correct spelling: dietitian

Correct name of RD Exam: Registration Exam

Indicate desired “emphasis” area for your Dietetic Internship

Spell full name of The Ohio State University

Plan to complete the dietetic internship (rather than “be accepted”)

Spell out all abbreviations (related to your jobs, activities, etc.)

Be specific about volunteer and job experiences you are planning (where and when?)

Join Dietetic Practice Groups in your interest area
