Long Vowel Cards: - Geneva 304

Long Vowel Cards:

The following cards contain words with the Long Vowel sounds. The letters that are in color are the letters that form the Long Vowel sound.

Long Vowel sounds are produced with the obvious letters (a,e,i,o,u). In second grade, we also learn about the combinations of the letters that can produce the long vowels sounds.

These cards will be used with the children this year. Here are some suggested activities when the cards are printed in color:

1. Have the children look at the letters in color. They are to say the sound the letters make first, and then say the word so that the child learns the rules of phonics. For example: If a word is only one syllable and ends in e, the vowel before the e is a long vowel sound.

2. Print two sets of cards; have the student use the activity as a concentration game. They are to flip over the card, say the sound the vowel makes, and then say the entire word.

3. Hand your child a card with a word. Identify the letters in blue and the sound that is made. Have your child write other words that have the same letter pattern that create the same sound. Example: Cry—my, by.

4. Give the student the cards and ask them to separate the cards by vowel sounds- long a in one pile, long o in another pile etc.

5. Additional blank cards are included for the student to add “pairs” to the set. Example- high- ask the student to write a word on the card that has the same letter combination to make the long i sound- bright.
