No remedy in sight, President

Barack Obama on

Sunday warned of a

‘‘massive and potentially

unprecedented

environmental disaster’’ as a badly damaged oil well in

the Gulf of Mexico spewed a widening and deadly slick

toward delicate wetlands

In 1781, he said, Father

Cal Am must reach the

Fighting over Carmel

River water dates back to the

SANTA CRUZ — She can

see the Boardwalk from her

room in Idaho, but the ocean

stops at the edge of a bedside

picture frame.

Helene Gallimore, 85, relished

panoramic ocean

views recently after flying

from Idaho to retrace the

sights, smells and tastes of a

youth spent in Santa Cruz.

“I can’t believe I’m here,”

she said. “It’s like a dream.”

A native of San Jose,

Gallimore spent many a

summer afternoon at the

Boardwalk but ended up in

Idaho for a job to support

her family. She never

returned.

She now lives in a senior

home in Boise, where the

photo of her flanked by girlfriends at the beach caught

the attention of maintenance

employee Danny Frazee.

He’d lived near UC Santa
