No remedy in sight, President
Barack Obama on
Sunday warned of a
‘‘massive and potentially
unprecedented
environmental disaster’’ as a badly damaged oil well in
the Gulf of Mexico spewed a widening and deadly slick
toward delicate wetlands
and wildlife.
He said it could
take many days to
stop. Obama flew to southern
Louisiana to inspect forces
arrayed against the oil
gusher as Cabinet members

In 1781, he said, Father

A water pipeline through Cañada de la Segunda linked
the Carmel River Aquifer to

down from the more than

drawn annually from the river.
Cal Am must reach the

Fighting over Carmel
River water dates back to the
era of the Spanish missions,
and it’s been a continuous
conflict since, said Carmel
Valley resident and attorney
Keith Vandevere.
Vandevere recounted Carmel Valley’s water wars at
A public forum Sunday at Sanctuary Bible Church before an audience of more than 100
people who came to hear discussions on the future of

SANTA CRUZ — She can
see the Boardwalk from her
room in Idaho, but the ocean
stops at the edge of a bedside
picture frame.
Helene Gallimore, 85, relished
panoramic ocean
views recently after flying
from Idaho to retrace the
sights, smells and tastes of a
youth spent in Santa Cruz.
“I can’t believe I’m here,”
she said. “It’s like a dream.”
A native of San Jose,
Gallimore spent many a
summer afternoon at the
Boardwalk but ended up in
Idaho for a job to support
her family. She never
returned.
She now lives in a senior
home in Boise, where the
photo of her flanked by girlfriends at the beach caught
the attention of maintenance
employee Danny Frazee.
He’d lived near UC Santa
Cruz for a few years himself.
The octogenarian took up
the 30-year-old’s offer to

The pair headed for Santa
Cruz for a three-night stay at
the beachfront Dream Inn.
