Ireland is an island in the west of Europe. It is a little smaller than Portugal and a little bigger than Sri Lanka. Its area is 82.378 sq. km and its population is only 5.103.555 inhabitants.

The island is divided into two parts. The larger part, the Republic of Ireland or Eire, is in the south. Its capital is Dublin. The smaller part of Ireland is Northern Ireland or Ulster, which is part of the United Kingdom and its capital city is Belfast. The other important cities are Cork, a major port, Limerick, the commercial centre for western Ireland and Londonderry, famous for the religious conflicts and violence between Protestants and Catholics.

In Ireland most people speak English. About one-third also speaks Irish, a Gaelic language that is the traditional tongue of Ireland, mainly spoken in rural areas.

St Patrick’s Day, March 17, is Ireland’s most important national day. On this day people of Irish origin wear green clothes and a shamrock, the symbol of the country... even if they don’t live in Ireland. There’s a strong sense of patriotism.

Irish people are very active and they love sports. Hurling, a violent and fast game similar to field hockey and Gaelic football are their national sports. Horse racing, dog racing and fishing are also highly popular.

The economy of Ireland was traditionally agricultural. Since the mid-1950’s, however, the country’s industrial base has expanded greatly. The manufacturing sector, construction and public utilities, tourism and the financial services sectors have also expanded.

Ireland has never been a rich country. It is not rich in money but it is rich in other things: in music, in poetry, in songs, in theatre, in dance. Irish people meet in pubs, where they drink Guinness, the national beer, and listen to traditional Irish music, usually played by a harp.

Ireland is so green that is called “the Emerald Isle”. Everywhere there are old villages, ruined castles, splendid mountains, beautiful valleys and lakes. It’s a magical island.
