7 Habits Current Use of Scripture

7 Habits Suggested Use of Key Scripture (Anchor Verse and Model of Jesus)

Foundation

- Anchor Verse: 2 Cor. 3:18

o “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”

- Jesus Models: Mark 1:17-18 (Jesus’ choosing of the disciples was a complete shift in paradigms and behaviors from previous way of discipleship where disciples had to seek out and convince a Rabbi that they were worthy of discipleship). Would set up the idea of choice nicely.

o “And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him.”

Habit 1

- Anchor Verse: Proverbs 1:23 or 4:5-9, and Joshua 24:15

o 1:23: “If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.”

o 4:5-9: “Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight. Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”

o Joshua 24:15: “ … then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

- Jesus Models in the temptations: Matthew 4:1-11

o Jesus chooses to live off of God’s words (starve) rather than turn stones into bread; Jesus chooses to not put God to the test rather than thrown himself down from the temple (thereby proving his deity); Jesus chooses worship God rather than accept all the kingdoms of the world.

Habit 2

- Anchor Verse: Luke 14:28-32

o “For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’”

- Jesus Models: Matthew 4:18-22

o While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Habit 3

- Anchor Verse: Matthew 6:33

o “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

- Jesus Models: Mark 1:35-38

o “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”

Private to Public

- Anchor Verse: I Thess. 5:11

o “Therefore encourage one another, and build up one other, just as you also are doing.”

- Jesus Models: Matthew 14:29-31

o He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Habit 4

- Anchor Verse: Philippians 2:3-4

o “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”

o Matt. 7:12: “ … therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

- Jesus Models: Luke 10:1-24 (Abundance Mentality); Matt. 26:39 (Courage & Consideration)

o Luke 10:1-24: Where Jesus sends out the Seventy-Two

o “And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.’”

Habit 5

- Anchor Verse: James 1:19

o Proverbs 18:13: “He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.”

o James 1:19: My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry… (NIV)

- Jesus Models: Mark 10:35-40 (James’ and John’s request – Jesus allows them to make a case)

o And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."

Habit 6

- Anchor Verse: Eccl. 4:9-10, 12

o “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.”

o Proverbs 27:17: “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

- Jesus Models: John 17:20-21 (We are in a synergizing kind of relationship with the Trinity)

o “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

Habit 7

- Anchor Verse: Eccl. 10:10

o “If the axe is dull and he does not sharpen its edge, then he must exert more strength. Wisdom has the advantage of giving success.”

o Hebrews 4:9-10? (Sabbath Rest)

▪ “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.”

- Jesus Models: Mark 6:31, Mark 6:46, John 2:1-2, Matt. 13:55

o Emotional & Mental: Mark 6:31: And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)

o Mental & Spiritual: Mark 6:46: After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.

o Social: John 2:1-2: On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

o Physical: Matthew 13:55: "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
