Samson (Part 1) (Judges 13 - 15)
Main Point: God always hears the cries of His people.
Key Verse: Then they got rid of the strange gods that were among them. They served the Lord. And He couldn’t stand to see Israel suffer anymore. – Judges 10:16
Materials: Cut-up strips of paper with verses for each team
Hands on Application:
• Say: A lot of times in the Bible, we learn about people who really loved God and followed God with all their heart. These people provide an example of how we are to love and follow God. They are models for us. Unfortunately, Samson was not one of these people. God blessed him and was with him even at a young age. But despite God’s blessings, Samson did not put God before himself. Samson was more interested in serving himself and his desires than serving God. This led him to live a life full of violence and trouble. Samson is an example of how not to live. But even though Samson was a less-than-perfect leader, God hated to see Israel suffering because He loved them.
• Say: Today we’re going to look at how God always rescues His people when they cry out to Him. Here we’ve got two verses cut up into small strips with one or two words each. Each strip of paper has a small picture of either Samson or a lion. I’m going to divide you into two teams – “the Samsons” and “the Lions.” The Samson team will grab all the strips that have Samson on them and the Lion team will grab the strips with the lion. Then, each team will try to unscramble their verse first. Divide students into teams and have them play the game. Leader, to make the game more difficult (to take more time) have students start without using their Bibles. After a while, if needed, allow them to use their Bibles.
Group Discussion:
• Say: There were many, many times the Israelites sinned against God and got into deep trouble. And what happened each time? Remember the big cycle? The Israelites cried out to God, and He always rescued them! Even when the Israelites’ sin became worse and worse than before, God never failed to save His people when they turned back to Him. Read those verses you just unscrambled. Allow teams to read their verses aloud. Those are just two of the many, many examples of God hearing the cries of His people and saving them. God never changes. He has also rescued each of us from our own sin, just like the Israelites. Just like He sent judges to save His people, He sent someone to save us: His son Jesus! God never fails to hear the cries of His people, and He never fails to rescue those who turn to Him!
Verse for Samson Team: Again the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. Then He gave them a man to save them. His name was Ehud, the son of Gera. – Judges 3:14-16
Verse for Lion Team: But when they cried out to the Lord, He raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. – Judges 3:9
Conversation with God (Prayer): Pray that your students will always remember that God loves them and will never fail to rescue them from their sin. Fill in the prayer journal and close in prayer.
